Background
Launched on March 14th 2022 by the Co-Chairs of the Steering Committee for SIDS Partnerships, Portugal and Samoa, the United Nations Small Island Developing States Partnerships Awards is an initiative proposed by Antigua and Barbuda and the Republic of Malta during their two-year tenure (2020-2021) as the Co-Chairs of the Steering Committee to recognize the efforts of the most genuine and durable partnerships for the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in line with of the SIDS Accelerated Modality of Action (SAMOA) Pathway.
Established by the General Assembly through resolution 76/203, the United Nations SIDS Partnerships Award was created in line with the objectives of the SAMOA Pathway, which also provided the guidance for the establishment of the SIDS Partnership Framework, designed to monitor progress of existing, and stimulate the launch of new, genuine and durable partnerships for the sustainable development of SIDS. The SAMOA Pathway is the internationally agreed outcome document of the Third International Conference on SIDS held in September 2014, Apia, Samoa which also saw the announcement of 300 multi-stakeholder partnerships devoted to the sustainable development of SIDS.
Subsequent to the Third International Conference for SIDS, The General Assembly, in creating the Steering Committee for SIDS Partnerships, encouraged new, genuine and durable partnerships for the sustainable development of small island developing States and mandated the Committee ‘to support the follow up of existing and promote and advocate the launching of new small island developing States partnerships. The United Nations SIDS Partnerships Award is created in line with this mandate and objectives of the Steering Committee for SIDS Partnerships.

The UN SIDS Partnerships Awards ceremony was held during at the 2023 Global Multi-Stakeholder Small Island Developing States Partnership Dialogue, which took place on Tuesday 11 July 2023, 10:00am – 1:00pm, Conference Room 3, UNHQ in New York. This was co-chaired by Permanent Representatives of Portugal and Samoa.

The first UN Small Island Development States Partnerships Awards 2022
The first United Nations Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Partnerships Awards was held on 11 July 2022 at the UN Headquarters, New York, during the Annual Global Multi-Stakeholder SIDS Partnerships Dialogue. The awards have been given to three winners in economic, social and environmental categories:
- Economic category: Unleashing the Blue Economy of the Caribbean 2022-2050, represented by the World Bank
- Environmental category: SIDS Lighthouses Initiative, represented by IRENA
- Social category: Italy-AOSIS Fellowship, represented by the Chair of AOSIS, Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda to the UN, and Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN
