    Description
    Intro

The youth of Moldova for SDGs campaign is part of the VNR of Agenda 2030. In this context, the VNR of Agenda 2030 estimated by 2020 the level of implementation of the SDGs by Moldova. To assess the level of implementation of the SDGs and young people’s views on the 2030 development agenda, the National Youth Council of Moldova (CNTM) implemented an extensive communication campaign to inform and engage young people in monitoring the SDGs in 22 rayons of the Republic of Moldova. By being included in the VNR, the youth of Moldova made their voices heard worldwide – over 1000 young people analysed the implementation of SDGs in their communities coming back with recommendations.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

It was a national and sub-regional project that represented youth from Moldova at the UN level via VNR of Moldova at UN HLPF in 2020. We succeeded in being presented at the international level elaborating an alternative youth report on their vision regarding localisation of SDGs in Moldova. We participated in the VNR Lab organised by the UNG agencies in Moldova and the Government, and other side events executed by UNFPA at the regional level. Our campaign had the following activities at the national and local level: 1) Launch of Youth of Moldova for SDGs campaign at the National Conference of Youth. The young people were informed about the campaign and its actions and involved in it. 2) Also, they learned about the 17 SDGs and expressed their opinions on their implementation in Moldova. We organised informational workshops in 22 youth centres districts on SDGs and their promotion on social media. During the workshops, the participants get acquainted with the SDGs and learn how to use social media to promote them online. 3) Promotion by the youth of SDGs on social media and Media Ambassadors' appointment for SDGs. The young people used online platforms to promote the SDGs and present their implementation on a local level. The most active young people were appointed as Media Ambassadors for SDGs. They gave their histories in the interviews organised by the project team whose records were published in different local and national newspapers or TV shows. 4) Organization of the national contest' SDG in a photo'. Young people from all over the country send pictures with SDGs being implemented in their communities. 5) SDG Youth Academy was organised where participants met experts and learned each SDG's specifics in part and how we can ensure their localisation in Moldova.

    Results/Outputs/Impacts

Results: 22 workshops on SDGs and social media; 440 young people trained; 30 young people trained in preparing the youth VNR report; 220 posts on social media by participants; 4 regional consultations with 80 participants; 17 ambassadors; 2 online conferences; 15 articles about the campaign and media presentations; 1 photo exhibition on SDGs; 1 Youth SDG Academy with 30 beneficiaries. An output of this project is that the youth voice from Moldova was heard at the UN level, due to the active participation during the VNR process. At the moment, ergo youth from Moldova are aware of SDGs and their importance for youth well-being. For example, we can observe that youth starter initiate their projects on SDGs. Finally, after the Government's recommendations to identify financial resources for supporting youth initiatives under SDGs, our immediate success could also be admitted because now there are two calls for submission on SDG promotion, which is a development in comprising to previous years.

    Enabling factors and constraints

The project's success results from the well-established partnership and joint interest to have one meaningful youth participation in the process of monitoring and evaluating SDGs in Moldova. To motivate and ensure direct, meaningful youth participation in the project and during the evaluation process, the participants used the same manners as in their daily life, making it a typical local act in their findings on SDGs via social media tolls or local news channels. The only restrain that we had during the project's implementation was the pandemic, which imposed us to change the scenery that led to changes within the activities implemented.

    Sustainability and replicability

From the replicability point of view, the project is easy to duplicate in other states, being of interest to all the figures involved, youth, public authorities, and independent donors. It is an initiative that can be supported and the State by independent NGOs. It is a price that should be prioritised by the state authorities and CSO as the VNR process is an instrument that will be played at the list till 2030. It is a good practice as a first step in creating a mechanism for developing SDGs with young people's involvement, being broad enough to expand with another project within, as an example - the SDG Youth Academy that we implemented as a continuation of the primary campaign. While offering the youth a fundamental role, they bring more enthusiasm and different perspective towards the importance and implementation of SDGs.

    COVID-19 Impact

A big part of our activities was organised offline, but still, some of the most important activities were organised online as the conference for presentation of youth report on SDGs and the SDG Youth Academy, which impacted the direct experience that the participants were supposed to have, nevertheless they were still offered the same space for discussion and debate since the sessions were organised as active as possible. It is doable to organise the project online. It will offer more space for the youth outside or farther away from the capital and more international experts to join and deliver sessions, which is positive. Still, the experience is not the same, a fact that the participants stated during the implementation.
