Multistakeholder Partnerships For The Sustainable Development Goals In Mexico

Description
Intro

The practice is a nationwide network that engages stakeholders and individuals in the implementation of the SDGs. Established in 2016, the initiative of MY World Mexico seeks to encourage public ownership of the SDGs through the participation in the UN Survey MY World 2030, voluntary actions, creative and innovative communications, campaigning and policy advocacy, in order to achieve the implementation of the SDGs in 2030.

Currently, the network is comprised of 100 members with an outreach of more than 10,000 people. Through voluntary actions, the organization works towards all 17 SDGs, and directly in the implementation of 25 targets.

Objective of the practice

The main distictive feature of the practice, is that is youth-led, but intergenerational and intersectional; which is in line with the multistakeholder approach of the 2030 Agenda, as well as with the recognition of youth as torchbearers. Breaking silos working along public sector, private sector and NGOs is an achievement that has been accomplished, but reaching out to more actors from the private sector has been a challenge as not as many entreprises are aware of or interested in the SDGs. Interpersonal relations of existing members of the initiative were key to reach out to other businesses.

Implementation of the Project/Activity

At the end of the year there is an open-call for new members, after a selection process at the beginning of the year, the members of the network make their commitments to implement the MY World 2030 survey and voluntary actions in favor of the SDGs. Every month these members submit a report of the actions being made, and the Focal Team of MY World Mexico evaluates them and gives feedback and follow-up if necessary. Later on, all of these reports are systematized and at the end of the year, the gathered data and information are shared in the annual report of MY World Mexico. If the members are interested in continuing the partnership, they can update their commitment.

In exchange for their engagement, members of MY World Mexico receive capacity-building sessions, as well as networking opportunities and the opportunity to showcase their work in different avenues.

In order to leave no-one behind, we encourage in our open-call for female, LGBTQ and indigenous people to apply. As well as people from different states of our country that have little to no participation in the network. This is also encouraged face-to-face by the members of the network.
Enabling factors and constraints
The level of action of the initiative is constrained by the territoriality of the country. As Mexico is relatively a big country, we are dependant on our access to the internet in order to work remotely. This is an asset to build a nationwide network, but not many parts of the country have internet connection available, so we can't reach out to smaller towns and remote areas.
Sustainability and replicability
As a network that works on a voluntary basis, volunteerism has been a cross-cutting means of implementation of the SDGs, that has helped us to localize the 2030 Agenda at the national and subnational levels. As people engage voluntarily, it is naturally socially sustainable.

On the one hand, as the initiative levarages and systematizes collective action in favor of the SDGs, we contribute on generating data that helps to foster sustainability in general. On the other hand, because our way of working is done remotely, the environment cost of the practice is minimal.

Moreover, the cost/efficiency implications are related to volunteerism. At the individual level, on one side, it has been proven that volunteering can affect stress levels and cause burnout. On the other side, volunteering can help people to feel part of a community, valued, develop skills and obtain expertise and work experience.
Conclusions

With all the voluntary actions and the inputs from the MY World 2030 survey, MY World Mexico has been able to advocate for the inclusion of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs in different levels of goverment. For example: at the subnational level, the 2030 Agenda has been alligned with the Development Plan of Jalisco 2013-2033. At the national level, MY World Mexico has been collaborating with the Office of the Presidency to provide inputs from civil society in their Voluntary National Reviews.
In terms of raise awareness on the SDGs, we have been able to reach out to more than 20,000 mexicans, mainly children and young people.
