Background
The theme of the 2027 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is “Scaling up just transitions to achieving sustainable development, poverty eradication and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs”. Recognizing the integrated, indivisible and interlinked nature of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2027 HLPF will conduct in-depth reviews of the following SDGs:
- SDG 4 – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
- SDG 10 – Reduce inequality within and among countries
- SDG 12 – Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
- SDG 15 – Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
- SDG 17 – Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development
With the 2030 deadline fast approaching, these reviews will identify what can be done to accelerate delivery over the next four years and how to address persistent barriers to progress, as well as new and emerging challenges. The 2027 HLPF will also be an important opportunity to share lessons learned from over a decade of implementation experience in advance of the HLPF when it meets under the auspices of the General Assembly (SDG Summit). The 2027 SDG Summit was invited by Member States in the Pact for the Future to consider how to advance sustainable development by 2030 and beyond.
The thematic reviews will be informed by a series of Expert Group Meetings (EGMs) (one for each Goal under review, with SDG 17 covered as a cross-cutting element in each EGM) organized in early 2027 by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), in collaboration with relevant UN system partners. The meetings will bring together diverse experts from government, the private sector, academia, civil society and the UN system to identify progress and challenges, share lessons learned and identify promising partnerships and opportunities for rapidly scaling up action toward achieving each of the goals, while also generating synergies and addressing trade-offs with other goals.
