Background
The importance of participation by all actors is emphasized throughout the 2030 Agenda. The Preamble highlights “a spirit of strengthened global solidarity, focused in particular on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable and with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders and all people.”
The 2030 Agenda recalls how the Sustainable Development Goals are “the result of over two years of intensive public consultation and engagement with civil society and other stakeholders around the world, which paid particular attention to the voices of the poorest and most vulnerable.”
Delivering the SDGs in the next decade will demand ambition, decisiveness and a sense of urgency. The Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals will demand the mobilization of everyone, everywhere, grounded on a level of ambition that supercharges ideas into concrete, bold and implementable solutions.
Our Work
The Division for SDGs (DSDG) supports and facilitates the participation of stakeholders from different sectors and levels in the implementation and follow up of the 2030 Agenda.
DSDG facilitates and promotes the contribution of stakeholders from different sectors at the global level, including at special events at the United Nations high-level political forum and at global conferences and events related to sustainable development.
DSDG also develops publications and other research materials and tools and provides capacity building opportunities for national governments and stakeholders to support knowledge exchange, identify good practices and to strengthen stakeholders’ engagement in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
Major Groups and Other Stakeholders
Major Groups and other Stakeholders (MGoS) were integral to the development and adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and have been actively working towards its implementation, through projects, initiatives, advocacy, knowledge-sharing, and monitoring. MGoS often work in partnership with other sectors, including governments.
The UN DESA Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC) is responsible for supporting the participation of Major Groups and Other Stakeholders at the United Nations high-level political forum and other intergovernmental processes.
