    Description
    Description

SAWA SAWA is an ethically made, sustainable, slow, non-profit fashion brand in Austin, Texas handmade by artisan women in Kenya. Our mission is to empower artisan women in Kenya to make a dignified income using ancient skills in beading, weaving, basketry, art and more. We harness the ancient craftsmanship by partnering with artisan women in Kenya. The raw materials come from nature. They are eco-friendly, locally sourced, sustainable, and circular. Creating a rapport with the women helps lift them from poverty. Economic independence helps the women create working economies in their villages. They have access to health care, food, education and a better quality of life. The brand brings sustainable, ethically made fashion accessories and bags to the American consumer.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

Our approach is to listen to the artisans. We create a relationship based on mutual respect. We meet the women in their natural environment. We respect their role in their homes and communities. Our team works directly with the women to provide high quality raw materials. They create designs that preserve the authenticity of the craft and the messages that are passed down. The bags are sourced, finished with leather in a workshop and shipped to Austin, Texas. The bags and accessories are sold. The revenue is ploughed back to the initiative and funds the End Period Poverty program that provides rural girls with reproductive health education and menstrual hygiene kits to help them stay in school.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

As our company grows, we grow our impact and the number of artisan women we partner with. The resources come from nature, they are sustainably harvested and therefore infinite. The number of artisan women is infinite. Every tribe in the continent of Africa has something to offer. We learn from the few villages we work with and apply the knowledge to other villages, tribes and countries. The model and logistics can be applied according to scale.

    Coordination mechanisms

The initiative is governed by the co-founders and a team of volunteers. Catherine oversees the artisan women activities in Kenya, product sourcing, quality control and various nonprofit empowerment programs. Anne and her team oversee product design, marketing, sales, fundraising and the American side of the initiative.
