Description
Grassroots youth empowerment with knowledge and skills on Human rights advocacy with a focus on the right to education Active (local and global) Citizenship, Peacebuilding and Conflict-resolution, and Youth Leadership/Life skills. The programme strengthens communities’ appreciation of the values and practices of peace, dialogue, and tolerance through activities with students and youth in mediation skills and conflict resolution. Engaging young people and children in promoting peace in conflict and post-conflict areas is an effective strategy that capitalizes on local talents and community members to lead continued peace processes and strengthens their sense of civic responsibility and belonging to their communities. The programme focuses on youth struggling with widespread poverty, limited access to education and health services, and persistent discrimination and violence due to gender, race, ethnic background, disability, or other factors of marginalization. This is particularly relevant for girls and young women, who face challenges such as restrictive gender roles, early or child marriage, child labor, and poor reproductive health. Through global citizenship education, the programme aims to empower and equip youth as leaders and active global citizens with the skills needed to lead others into a movement of climate action.
Through 11 community learning centers young people and community members gain key life-skills for civic and social development at large. They will be trained in mediation, conflict resolution, life-skills, trauma healing as well as business, ICT, project management and entrepreneurship skills. Young people are also equipped with knowledge and life skills that give them opportunities to access decent livelihood and resources to access the job market and become self-employed. As a result, the conditions for community resilience improve when youth become more independent and less prone to join armed groups or gangs, but to serve and improve their communities benefit. Youth are socially and economically empowered by equipping them with gender-sensitive global citizenship skills and behaviors. The programme aims to reach the most vulnerable youth by providing high quality education content, therefore urging them to explore social concepts such as identity, community norms, and socio-economic status. With a great emphasis on gender equality, we intend to engage with educators, practitioners, and government institutions in an effort to advocate for, integrate, and build gender-sensitive Global Citizenship Education in local programming at scale, contributing to SDG5. The project follows 3 pathways to bring about the desired change: building the capacity of Civil Society Organizations, contributing to SDG 16, improving the access to quality life skills and global citizenship education programmes, and integrating gender-sensitive GCED components and domains in national discussions and curricula. Youth utilize gained knowledge and resources and take action against climate issues locally, generating evidence of youth’s central role in building sustainable, productive, and just communities. Young people in Y4SDGs are trained by young GCEDP leaders and equipped with skills and knowledge to participate in development.
