Description
Fashion has the power to shape culture and behaviour beyond the industry itself. Environmental pollution is the most pressing problem of our time. Humankind's activities through urbanization, industrialization, mining, and exploration are at the forefront of global environmental pollution, with the fashion industry being a huge contributor to it but can also be a force for positive change. We are helping solve that by designing and making jewellery from banana fibre, while providing an opportunity for women, artisans and farmers to collaborate with us. An ideal way to reflect our values, identities and beliefs is through preserving our arts, crafts and culture, they are a reminder of a slow and green life that we all should embrace to have a better planet. Amongst most tribes in the rural areas across Kenya, the old traditional craftsmanship practices have existed from generation to generation but are slowly diminishing. This initiative aims to restore this culture by repurposing this craftsmanship by using it as the inspiration behind the banana fibre jewellery and empowering women in rural areas by imparting them with skills and knowledge to be able to take advantage of the natural resources around them to create beautiful crafts.
This Initiative is carried out with utmost consciousness to the environment to ensure best practices around environment. The extraction process is free from chemicals and is done to achieve the finest and smooth quality of the fiber to produce jewellery of great quality and friendlier feel to the skin. This is done by boiling the strips from the banana stem to make them softer for easier and greater quality fiber extraction.
We provide training for women in the whole banana fiber process, from harvesting and boiling the strips to the extraction of fiber and jewellery creation. A similar process is done with artisans in Nairobi to engage in co-creation of brass accessories that are used to complete the jewellery. Our processes are published on social media.
Omina Otsieno Banana Fiber Jewellery environmental safety strategy is fixed around natural fibers, resources and materials available in the rural areas and recycled and sustainable accessories. With advice from environmental strategic experts from our partners via webinars we are able to continue with implementation of our strategy across the organization and industry.
We are growing brand and hope to expand and hire more people in the respective organizational areas. We have a team that comprises of strong, talented, hardworking and dedicated people determined to achieve our organizational goals. We have a creative director who guides the projects and is responsible for overall quality of work, head of operations in the banana fiber production process who oversees the process right from the farm to the weaving stage, a photographer/videographer who is responsible for ensuring all materials are available for commercial use by capturing events and records. We occasionally consult from experts in safety environmental practices, mentors, business advisors and accountants.
We are in the process of researching on available natural dye companies in Kenya to integrate this in our production. We are also in the process of a collaboration with a Spanish jewellery designer to expand our market.
