    WeLoveU’s Chairwoman Zahng Gil-jah launched the campaign to deliver 3,000 solar-powered lanterns to vocational students in Haiti. The lanterns were selected to be sustainable, durable and multifunctional. Climate change threatens to submerge and erase Tuvalu's culture forever. They face severe drinking water shortages as groundwater is salted. With residents depending on rainwater, a water storage tank is essential for survival. The WeLoveU Foundation installed 20 water tanks holding 200,000 liters of water in Funafuti. The tanks benefited 10,000 people in the island's capital. Additionally, 80 volunteers cleaned up trash mixed with seawater that rushed into homes when the tide rose.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

    The implementation plan to help combat the lack of electric energy and frequent blackouts was to deliver to each student a solar powered lantern. We worked with the President of Haiti’s office to prepare the ceremony to award the best vocational students. The lanterns were ordered ahead of time and shipped to Haiti to be ready for the ceremony held in a large auditorium at the school, fitting over 1,000 students. To ensure Tuvalu's citizens had access to drinking water, an implementation plan was developed that centered around installing water storage tanks in the island's most populated area. With over 6,000 people living in the capital city of Funafuti, it was identified as the ideal location to maximize support. Each water tank could hold 10,000 liters of water, and WeLoveU donated 20 tanks capable of storing a combined 200,000 liters of water. With this in place, approximately 10,000 individuals would now have access to clean water, significantly improving their daily lives.

    Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

    The students that received the lanterns were able to take them home the same day. They shared the lanterns with their families, neighbors and friends explaining how the lanterns became a vital source of light for them at night. By having the solar powered lantern, they can charge it during the day, and it increases their productivity after sundown whether to are tasked to complete schoolwork or other activities. Students would even begin to study in groups, being encouraged with the new opportunity to study at the hours with no electricity. As the students were moved by the community engagement with their lanterns, they began to even take apart the lantern for the purpose of learning how to build the technology and spread the light given by the WeLoveU Foundation. The families that received the water tanks installed them themselves. While installing them, WeLoveU volunteers noticed the trash crisis surrounding the village and organized Tuvalu's first-ever cleanup to educate the residents about environmental protection. The Environment Department Manager, Miriama Uluiviti, and about 80 people from the city office and neighborhood participated and collected 20,000 pounds of trash.

    Coordination mechanisms

    WeLoveU visited Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to hand-deliver the solar-powered lanterns to students that attend the Wharf Jeremie Vocational and Technical Training Center. The lanterns were gifted during a ceremony held together with Maguy Durcé ,the Director of the Institute of Vocational Training, Ronald Legoute the Project Manager from the Presidential office, and Jean Marie Boujolie, the Principal of the school. During the ceremony, the students were given an opportunity to have a platform to discuss their professional aspirations and make a pledge with the newfound inspiration from the WeLoveU Foundation. In partnership with Tuvalu's Prime Minister Enele Sosene Sopoaga and Governor General Iakoba Taeia Italeli, WeLoveU successfully coordinated the cleanup and donation of water tanks to the island nation. The donation ceremony served as an opportunity to give the tanks and a platform for Tuvalu officials to express their views on the critical role the tanks would play in their daily lives. Following the ceremony, the community united to install the tanks and pipes. Young children helped by smoothing the ground in preparation for the tanks, while adults worked diligently to set them up.
