Description
The Resilient and Sustainable Islands Initiative (RESI) is a global advisory network. It works to improve the conditions under which SIDS can achieve financial sustainability, environmental justice, international alliances and equitable societies.
RESI works with Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and their partners to frame policy problems, influence international institutions and find solutions to growing sustainability challenges in small islands. RESI is working on the following objectives: 1. Increase awareness and understanding in the international development community of SIDS’ challenges in relation to global governance 2. Generate high quality, independent analysis and policy recommendations to support critical areas of SAMOA pathway implementation 3. Support SIDS intergovernmental organisations and specialist SIDS units in International Organizations to expand and improve their support to SIDS
Given that, currently, it is a small initiative of only 6 directors, RESI reaches directly within its network of UN agencies, Donor Governments and Multilateral Development Banks to solicit partnerships for projects it wishes to undertake. Meetings and discussions are held with partners to develop strategies and execute these projects.
RESI undertakes research work, hosts policy dialogues and attend international events to present the findings of its research. In terms of policy support, RESI has done the following: 1. Informing SIDS4 agenda: RESI's research papers supported the development of positions by SIDS representatives for the preparatory meetings in preparation for the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4). Its Working Paper, ‘Global Bargain for Resilient Prosperity in SIDS’ offered ideas that helped to shape preamble of zero draft document for SIDS4. 2. RESI's Policy Brief, "Enhancing access to climate finance for Small Island Developing States: Considerations for the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Board", was considered by the board of the GCF at it's 37th meeting. 3. As noted, RESI has hosted the first SIDS Future Future, which was well received by SIDS Permanent Secretaries and Ambassadors, some of whom noted that the Forum should be held at least every 2 years.
RESI's coordination mechanisms can be described as shown below. - RESI's governance structure consists of one Director and 6 co-directors who make decisions and oversee the operations of the Initiative. It is housed at the ODI, the overarching governance institution for the Initiative, and reports also to the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), it's main funder. RESI however has considerable autonomy. RESI Directors meet regularly to decide on the progress and work program of the Initiative's objectives, as well as with the FCDO to provide updates on the work programme. - RESI has 60 Affiliates: researchers from across universities and research centres in the Pacific, Caribbean, Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea (AIS) and elsewhere, as well as researchers, practitioners and policy makers and other stakeholders based in global centres around the world whose work is centred on SIDS’ sustainable development and resilience. They are called on to help design workstreams, including paid consultancies to write working papers and policy briefs, and contribute to blogs and events, as well as appearing on the RESI podcast. - RESI works closely with UN agencies. For example, it recently collaborated with UNDESA, UNOHRLLS and Islands Innovation to host the first SIDS Future Forum in New York. Over 70 persons attended in person, Permanent Representatives and Ambassadors of SIDS as well as representatives of the UN, with 4,065 who watched online. - RESI hosts a monthly podcast, with 6 episodes released thus far. It has over 500 listeners. RESI also communicates through its webpage where it hosts research papers, working papers, meetings report, Insights, among other material. The webpage had 3303 visits in 2023. RESI communicates to it's affiliates at least once monthly through an email newsletter. RESI provides quarterly detailed report to the FCDO on the status of the Initiative's objectives and work progress, as well as its impact by way of outputs and outcomes.
