Description
The Regenerative Territories Reserve Program (“Program”) is a coalition whose core purpose is to promote and strengthen Nature-based Solutions (“NbS”) and positive socio-environmental impact entrepreneurship, under a blended finance model. Understanding that by impacting businesses we can leverage our reach since they can be agents of change by connecting different stakeholders in their production and distribution chains, between employees, consumers, and business administrators themselves. Thus, by promoting a sustainable tourism business environment linked to regenerative agriculture, the Program will impact the water and food supply chain, the quality of life, and well-being, in addition to increasing the resilience of the ecosystem to tackle climate change. Other sustainable industries and business are also being supported by the program according to local needs and reality.
The Program was launched in mid-2021. Our goal is to expand it to other territories in Brazil for the next 10 years.
Program was designed after Covida20 program, a blended finance program to support impact business during Covid19 pandemic. Around USD 1.5 MM were mobilized through crowdlending operations for 47 Small Impact Businesses in Brazil, to protect employment. Based on that experience, Regenerative Territories was created adding structured support for impact business development and local connection. Mapping of the local reality is the first step, to understand the development stage of impact business and design courses, mentoring and other actions. Given the low maturity of the business, this stage is requiring great attention and focus, for future access to financial solutions (seed capital, loans and other sources of income). On-going evaluation with partners is required for the project evolution.
The program has training and support for business development as a relevant driver. Initial results are being constantly revised for future implementation in new territories where the program may also be applied.
Strategic and Executive committees are in place for each region. They are responsible for the definition of overall strategies, fundraising, connection with stakeholders, definition and approval of actions to be implemented that are coordinated by task groups that also perform interaction with local actors and business. Each Territory has a philanthropic fund to cover business development initiatives, projects, seed capital for entrepreneurs, renegotiation reserve for crowdlending operations and program management.
While the still Program is recent, initial outputs are associated with courses and actions for business development, considering the number of beneficiaries attending. Future goals are linked to the number of businesses presenting and implementing impact projects along with their sales volumes. Jobs created and income evolution as well as the maturity of impact measurement are some of the outcomes to be monitored. Finally, impact is expected of the recognized sense of community, new business associations, overall improved resilience of impact business, regenerated forest areas and improved quality of water.
