Description
Acien is a regenerative knitwear brand rooted in regeneration, female heritage, and cultural preservation. We work exclusively with plant-based fibres sourced from social enterprises and collaborate closely with artisans, farmers, and scientists to create garments that are fully biodegradable and naturally dyed with earth-positive botanical pigments. At Acien, our mission is to offer clothing that minimises environmental harm and actively contributes to ecosystem restoration. Each piece is designed to return safely to the soil, enriching it upon decomposition. We honour ancestral weaving techniques from southern Spain, passed down through generations of women, particularly through the founder’s grandmother. These methods are undocumented in books, making their preservation through lived experience an act of cultural resilience and female empowerment. By bridging science, craftsmanship, and tradition, Acien is redefining fashion as a regenerative, culturally rooted, and purpose-driven practice, contributing meaningfully to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Acien drives its regenerative fashion initiative through community collaboration, sustainability certifications, and circular design principles. We use certified fibres like GOTS- and OEKO-TEX-certified plant-based materials, Merino D'Arles wool, and Himalayan nettle from social enterprises. Partnering with elderly artisans in southern Spain and local cultural institutions, we revive ancestral weaving techniques. Our upcoming project, “Hybrid”, in collaboration with El Ejido’s Culture Councillor, culminates in a public exhibition and runway show on International Flamenco Day, showcasing regenerative knitwear made with zero-waste knitting and natural dyes. Each project serves not only as a fashion collection but as a living research and preservation effort, where younger generations learn from elder artisans. This methodology ensures that undocumented ancestral techniques are preserved, practised, and passed on through direct collaboration. We follow a made-to-order and limited-run model to prevent overproduction and integrate invasive plants threatening local biodiversity into our textiles. This project combines fashion creation with the vital preservation of ancestral craftsmanship and knowledge transfer. Hybrid will also be featured at the E-Fashion Awards (Paris) and Kew Gardens (London), expanding our message globally. Our work has been showcased at UNESCO, the United Nations of India, the LVMH Green Trail Awards, Lakmé Fashion Week, as well as London Fashion Week, Dutch Design Week, Hong Kong Fashion Week, and Future Fabric Expo.
Acien is committed to sharing regenerative knowledge and ancestral craft techniques across generations and communities. Following the launch of our Hybrid collection, we will host a series of public workshops in partnership with the Town Hall of El Ejido (Almería). These workshops, co-led by elderly artisans, will teach esparto grass weaving techniques and explore how clothing can be created from fully biodegradable, plant-based fibres, engaging younger generations in sustainable practices. To widen impact beyond our local community, we are producing a short documentary capturing the full creative and regenerative process of Hybrid, developed in collaboration with activist partners. This will be screened in London, where Acien is based, alongside educational content across digital platforms to increase accessibility and transparency. Our artisan collaborators are already leading school workshops to preserve these undocumented techniques. Through the Hybrid collection, we aim to bring this knowledge into a contemporary context, showing how ancestral methods can be applied to wearable garments—not just craft objects—making it relevant and inspiring to young audiences. Acien also regularly partners with educational institutions, including Central Saint Martins and the London College of Communication, where we host student screenings, talks, and mentorship placements. Through these collaborations, we provide students with hands-on experience in regenerative fashion, zero-waste techniques, and natural dyeing. In addition, our work using invasive plant species as raw materials opens the door for dialogue with local governments. We are currently engaging with local councillors to present creative and ecological solutions for managing invasive flora while regenerating native ecosystems, helping others understand how design can serve both environmental and cultural restoration.
Acien is independently founded and led by Silvia Acien, who directs the brand’s creative and strategic vision. Each collection is developed through meaningful collaborations with institutions, local governments, scientists, and artisan communities. Our current project, Hybrid, exemplifies this model by bringing together social enterprises in Nepal harvesting Himalayan nettle, artisans in Spain and France working with esparto, and local community members to ethically source biodegradable fibres like lotus flower, organic hemp, regenerative merino wool, and invasive species like Arundo donax. We work closely with elderly weavers in southern Spain to preserve ancestral techniques and partner with El Ejido’s Culture Councillor to celebrate heritage, create community employment, and embed sustainability into our circular fashion practices. This collaborative, inclusive governance approach drives Acien’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Acien bridges ancestral wisdom and scientific innovation by preserving traditional weaving techniques while collaborating with scientists to develop regenerative materials. We’ve shared ancestral skills with younger generations through workshops and panels at institutions like Central Saint Martins, Colechi, and New Order of Fashion. Our collections have been exhibited internationally—at London Fashion Week, Lakmé Fashion Week, and Dutch Design Week—and featured in global media including Vogue, Wall Street Journal, and El País. Locally, however, is where we see the deepest impact. When our story appears in regional news, communities feel seen. This recognition fosters awareness around biodegradability, overproduction, and the end-of-life of garments—key themes that drive our work and values. Sourcing truly regenerative, biodegradable materials remains our greatest challenge, as does natural dyeing with lesser-known plants that don’t always yield long-lasting colour. Yet we embrace this ephemeral beauty as part of our philosophy, honouring the impermanence of nature and materials that return to the earth. Looking ahead, we plan to pursue B Corporation certification, formalising our commitment to social and environmental responsibility through transparent and accountable practices.
