Description
1. Safe and Affordable Drinking Water services. Provide access to a safe and affordable water service, that is sustainable, close to home and managed professionally;
2. Climate-Resilient WASH services and communities. Ensure that all WASH services withstand climate-related events, strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities to resist climate shocks, and services are operated using low carbon energy sources, such as solar power;
3. Prevent water scarcity crisis through early action. Avert water scarcity crises through water resources assessments, sustainable groundwater withdrawal, efficient use, and early warning and early action to prevent situations when water supplies are fully depleted;
4. Water cooperation for peace and stability. Work with communities and key stakeholders so that equitable management of water resources and WASH services contribute to increased social cohesion, political stability and peace dividends; and in conflict zones to prevent attacks on water and sanitation infrastructure and personnel.
We are focusing on four strategies to achieve sustainable results at scale:
• Advocate for political commitment and policy change. Support governments to integrate WASH priorities into climate policies, strategies and plans such as the National Adaptation Plans and Nationally Determined Contributions. Promote improved water cooperation between different users and integrate conflict sensitivity into plans for water supply systems.
• Accelerate financing & capacity.
Mobilize business and innovations.
• Activate young people as champions and agents of change.
Our goal is, by 2025, to reach 450 million children and their families (1.3 billion people) living in areas of high or extremely high water vulnerability with water security solutions. And by 2030, for all children have access to a safe and affordable water supply and live in water secure communities. Today, 1.3 billion people – including 450 million children – live in areas of extreme water vulnerability. For children, water is life. When children don’t have access to safe water, it puts their health, nutrition, education and futures at risk. Water scarcity limits both the amount and quality of drinking water for children, and forces them to walk longer distances to fetch water – interrupting their education and even putting their lives at risk. Unsafe water can transmit diseases like cholera and cause diarrhoea – a leading killer of children. Climate change is compounding water scarcity, and thus increasing the threat to children. Many changes in climate are felt through water – droughts, floods, rising seas – and extreme weather events can damage vital water and sanitation infrastructure and services at home, schools and health care facilities and food supplies. No one suffers more from a change in climate than children. Water scarcity and climate change are also drivers of conflict and migration and communities and entire populations compete for shrinking water resources. Families may be forced to leave their homes in search of reliable water supplies and livelihood opportunities. The resulting impact on children’s health, development, and safety threatens the significant progress made in child survival and sustainable development over the past 30 years.
