Providing the Islamic university with clean renewable solar energy

Islamic University of Gaza (
Academic institution
)
#SDGAction33374
    Description
    Intro

    this practice to provide clean solar energy Islamic University of Gaza. Gaza Strip live under siege from 14 years, and the electricity is available about 8 hours daily, so the educational process in university affected negatively. therefore, the solar energy was the best solution to allow university to provide students with recent knowledge in scientific fields, and reduce the electricity cost.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

    * Islamic university of Gaza prepared many project proposals to get external funds for this practice * the university received fund from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. * Starting the project from 2016 to build the photovoltaic cells on roof of about 10 buildings. * The project provides about 1,500,000 kilowatts Hour annually

    Results/Outputs/Impacts

    Building KWH annually A - Old Administrative Building =216,000 K- Classrooms Building =75,000 B- New Administrative Building = 300,000 Central Library Building = 132,000 Conferences Building = 120,000 L- Classrooms = 75,000 M- Classrooms and Staff rooms = 168,000 Q- Student activities building = 75,000 N- Classrooms = 84,000 J- Continuous learning Building =132,000 I- Information Technology Building =290,000 P- Graded large classrooms =60,000 C- Laboratories Building =385,000 R- Irada building for the rehabilitation of the handicapped =96,000 S- South Campus =72,000 T- South Campus =35,000 Medicine College Building =96,000 Mosque =12,000 Total of Consumption annually = 2,423,000 * Accomplished Solar Energy System Cover more than 45% of consumption energy, it is about 1,100,000 KWH annually.

    Enabling factors and constraints

    To implement this practice, the university preparing many technical proposals and searching appropriate sponsors to fund it. Therefore, the practice was divided to separated stages to be able for implemented by several sponsors. also, few of technicians in university are get suitable training to be experts in renewable energy fields. beside allocating suitable places in university for implementation.

    Sustainability and replicability

    In general, renewable energy fields are classified as a part of sustainability practices. the university still plans to complete this practice for all their building, and as advanced step to provide renewable energy for near local society and support the electricity company in Gaza.

    COVID-19 Impact

    COVID-19 affects negatively on all life aspects, the university closed face-to-face services, so the practice is move slowly and most sponsors changes their priorities. Currently, the university re-plans the distribution of loads between solar energy and energy of electricity company to reduce consumption from outside of university and allocate priority table according to available solar energy. university clinic and pharmacy have priority to be able to provide its services for people in/outside university.
