The Price to Pay: Fashion Revolution documentary on living wages

Fashion Revolution CIC (
Non-governmental organization (NGO)
)
#SDGAction55023
    Description
    Description

    ‘The Price to Pay’ will highlight how fashion executives turn over billions by selling eye-watering volumes of cheap clothes, meanwhile, garment workers in the Global South cannot escape poverty. The system is not broken, it is a neo-colonial legacy that works exactly as it was designed to. This documentary series is a rallying cry, for the people who make our clothes to get paid a living wage, and for that right to be enshrined in law.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

    Shooting this documentary will involve:

    - Using local crews that understand the local context

    - Making sure we have garment workers’ consent on how this footage will be used

    - Organising a viewing with the local garment workers and organisations involved in the project

    - Compensating garment workers for their time at living wage rates. We will organise global screenings and panel discussions to engage citizens to act and demand living wages for garment workers worldwide.

    Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

    The documentary launch will be organised globally during Fashion Revolution Week. This approach will allow Fashion Revolutionaries around the world to gain insight on this systemic imbalance in the global fashion industry and provide tangible calls to action to fight for living wages for garment workers worldwide. The screenings will provide the opportunity to engage in conversations with impacted stakeholders. Given that we focus on Latin America, Asia and Europe, the screenings will be context-specific to explore the parallels that these geographies have in common while also highlighting how the unique cultural, political and economic contexts impact garment workers differently. In short, these screenings will platform localised fights for living wages in a globalised world.

    Coordination mechanisms

    Given their roster of activist directors and lengthy experience in creating entertaining films that cover a breadth of topics in the environmental and humanitarian space, Waterbear Network will hold responsibility for the production of this initiative. Fashion Revolution, who has been campaigning for safe and fair working conditions in the fashion industry since 2014 is now the world’s largest fashion activism movement spanning 75 countries. Fashion Revolution’s wage and advocacy experts who have worked extensively on living wages will provide guidance on the project's technical details and overall content and support connections with key stakeholders.
