Description
Garland of Victory is a New York-based conscious lifestyle brand partnering with Dhaka based TransEnd, a youth-led organization committed to empowering gender minorities in Bangladesh.
Garland of Victory x TransEnd (GVXTE) is working to create inclusive and sustainable work in the informal handicrafts sector in Bangladesh. We are contributing to a green economy by working with deeply marginalized gender minorities, whom we aim to align within the SDG target of gender equality by 2030. GVXTE utilizes circular design methods including zero-waste and upcycling to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns.
We prioritize fair labor and circular design through the following methodologies:
Uplifting marginalized communities through dignified work- across the world, gender minorities are socially and economically oppressed through workplace and housing discrimination. In order to work with marginalized artisans, we focused on community-centered design. The product design was directly influenced by the many constraints faced by all members of the project. We developed handmade items that require almost no machine work and little set up requirements. Garland of Victory hired a local designer to train TransEnd beneficiaries to make the products and perform quality control. Garland of Victory also secured a workspace for the artisans, as their home is not suitable or secure to work in and TransEnd had no physical office space. TransEnd's team regularly interviewed the artisans to see how they felt doing the work, and what their needs were in terms of hours and wages. We consulted with local garment labor activists and set our fair wage as 2x the national average wage.
Circular design including upcycled and zero-waste materials- the infinity plant hanger was designed to weave small scraps of heritage textiles from local tailoring shops with upcycled donated sarees from community. Traditional garments are often made to order and custom fit by tailors. The small scraps from these orders are usually discarded. Finding a way to use these small scraps is part of our zero waste methodology adapted to the regions of the world where heritage textiles and made to order apparel are prevalent such as South and Southeast Asia, Africa, and South and Central America. As a vulnerable community living on the front lines of climate change, the gender diverse artisans we work with are invested in sustainable craft. It is meaningful to them as artists to create a product of value using upcycled sarees donated by community well wishers.
GVXTE will provide valuable data towards SDG #5 (Gender Equality) and #8 (Decent Work) through participatory action research done in partnership with Dhaka based social scientists. The data will be presented via reports and shared with data initiatives in Bangladesh. We will educate consumers on ethical consumption via social media posts and remain active in academic, industry, and social movement spaces as we continue to build capacity.
Garland of Victory is governed by a board of leaders in the fields of: sustainable fashion, direct social services, and grassroots activism. Through our strategic partnerships, we employ methods such as: allyship building through education and programming, international and intergenerational collaboration, and radical transparency. We foster creative community with our textile donation and zero waste campaigns. Our peer support system is rooted in research and critique.
Garland of Victory is committed to reducing textile waste through a pre-order sales model to eliminate excess production. We currently use conventional cotton sourced locally in Bangladesh, but aim to use organic and/or recycled cotton for our bags by 2024. Currently, 70% of our bag offering is dyed with natural indigo in a non-toxic fructose and calcium hydroxide vat. The remaining 30% is undyed cotton rope with a bleached white lining. Our plant hangers are made with 100% upcycled materials using a zero-waste method. In 2024, we plan to expand our product offering with apparel and will feature pre-order sales, organic cotton, recycled fibers, and sustainable fabrics such as modal and tencel. We will continue to experiment with our labor model and consider local markets in Dhaka and developing artisan groups in the US to reduce carbon emissions from shipping.

GVXTE was designed to benefit deeply marginalized hijra, trans, and gender non-conforming artisans in Dhaka. A portion of the artisans we work with are living in urban slums and are exposed to high-risk work and living conditions due to economic and social oppression. In addition to selling the products through Garland of Victory’s e-commerce store, the products developed through GVXTE have been designed to encourage entrepreneurship among the Dhaka based artisans. To date, several artisans have trained others to make the products and created small businesses selling locally.
