    Description
    Description

For the past 8 years, Fundação Príncipe (FP) toke the challenge of addressing priority areas for the sustainable development of Príncipe Island UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, partnered up with with local communities and government. With a team of 64 people (98% locals) FP grew from a single donor to a network of more than 15 donors and an increasing network of regional, national and international partners, with the mission of conserve and protect Príncipe biodiversity, contributing to the socio-economic development of local communities, with the vision of having a prosperous, secure and healthy Príncipe for his biodiversity and communities.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

Fundação Príncipe (FP) approach is based on a participatory strategy, not only in the implementation of projects, but also in the development of ideas. The relevant stakeholders are consulted during the concept note of projects, using tools like tree of problems, tree of solutions, risk assessment and stakeholders analyzing, ending up with logical frameworks for urgent actions and priorities identified by each working group. These priorities are crossed with the Sustainable Development Plan Príncipe 2030, which was developed by the Regional Government with the support of UN-Habitat and the contribution of all stakeholders on the island, having as base the SAMOA Pathway Priority areas and the SDGs. FP believes that women, girls, and people with disabilities in SIDS are particularly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of disasters, climate change, and other threats, due to gender, age, and disability inequality of risk as both a driver and consequence of disasters. So, to achieve the sustainable development of the Island is of paramount important to have a strong Equity policy and ensure that women, girls and people with disabilities are a priority, ensuring that their perspectives in all their diversity is integrated into the formulation and implementation of policies, projects and programs at all stages of prevention, mitigation, and preparedness, response, and recovery in Príncipe. All projects are developed in a participatory approach, and framed in line with funding and donors’ opportunities, with FP as the leader on applying for grants, ensuring a transparent and efficient management of funds, and a proper Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning plan of outputs and outcomes. All results are presented in public reports and shared with donors, partners and relevant stakeholders.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

One of Fundação Príncipe (FP) Strategic Goals is to Increase the capacity and resilience of the organization throughout Capacity building, both internally and for civil society, as FP believes that is essential to achieve its mission. To ensure the compliance of these objective and values, FP developed a participatory internal capacity building plan for the FP team, including an ongoing review and assessment of skills and needs. FP is also ensuring the diversification of funding sources, with a focus on long-term flexible funding. FP Reviews and evaluate continuously the structure and governance of the organization in order to maintain an effective and efficient framework and is investing in the Elaboration and implementation of a participatory Stakeholder Engagement Plan, transversal to the FP.

    Coordination mechanisms

An informal committee of Coordination is in place with the Regional Government and with National and International Stakeholders, to ensure that all projects implemented by Fundação Príncipe (FP) are aligned with the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve priorities, with the Sustainable Development Plan Príncipe 2030 (produced in partnership with all the stakeholders on the island) and with the SIDS-POA on the island. Monthly, FP management teams meet with regional authorities to discuss projects development and implementation, as well and priorities to the island sustainable development. FP is also member of several National, regional and international networks, especially with other Portuguese speaking countries and other Small Island Developing States groups, ensuring the coordination, integration and exchange of capacity building opportunities. Internally, FP have an independent volunteer Board of Directors who ensures the coordination of FP mission, supported by an independent and volunteer Audit Board. An Executive Director coordinates a team of 64 people, 98% locals, who implements FP’s Marine, Terrestrial and Community Engagement Programs on the island with local stakeholders. FP international partner, Fauna&Flora International, seconds international managers to ensure the capacity building and the growth of FP internal team.
