Background
In its resolution 77/245, the General Assembly decided to convene in 2023, prior to the commencement of its 78th session, a regional preparatory meeting in each of the three regions of small island developing States, as well as an interregional preparatory meeting for all small island developing States, to identify and develop input for the Conference, while maximizing coherence and complementarity with respect to other preparatory work.
The preparatory meeting for the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea (AIS) region will be held from 24-26 July 2023 in Balaclava, Mauritius.
To create a space for stakeholders, especially those in SIDS countries, to contribute to the substantive preparations for the SIDS4 Conference, UNDESA, in collaboration with UN OHRLLS, convened a global online stakeholder consultation between 13 June and 7 July 2023. Respondents were asked to identify key challenges, game-changing actions and policy recommendations as informal inputs to the preparatory process. This regional snapshot presents the main outcomes of the inputs received by organizations working in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea (AIS) region.
