Youth Education through Sport (YES)

Description

A community based sports initiative targeting children and young people as a platform to raise awareness on key issues impacting their lives including HIV/AIDS. The programme facilitates youth to youth engagement, human and community development through sport. It facilitates life skills training for young people, including promoting the spirit of voluntarism and self initiative for community benefit.Programme was piloted in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1999 and later rolled out to all 10 provinces. It is implemented as part of Community Sport Development Programme (CSDP) in partnership with sport associations, government departments and NGOs.

Expected Impact

The YES programme activities are steered by; At National Level – the CSDP National Secretariat; At Provincial Level – SRC Provincial Office and Provincial YES Committees; At District Level – the District YES Committees;At Ward Level – the Ward League Committees; At Club Level – adult facilitators and youth peer leaders;Steering Committees at each level are guided by Terms of Reference, provisions of implementation guidelines and technical advice from the National Secretariat.The above structures are responsible for: Generating increased awareness about the YES programme, Networking with public and private sector organizations to secure support towards the National YES Festival activities, Organizing necessary logistics, including mobilizing the financial and material resources. Publicizing their activities in order to generate awareness and maximum support.Life Skills Education - Weekly life skills education sessions based on the 13 topics as contained in the YES manual. Specific written plans for each of these sessions is documented and included in the assessment file for adjudication.

Governed

The YES programme is decentralized in implementation to all 10 Provinces of the country where the Sports and Recreation Commission has established Provincial Offices. Coordination at provincial level focus on the running of the programme activities through the following 3 components: (1). Sport - Local leagues, tournaments and festivals for football, netball, volleyball and communities are free to include other sports. (2)Peer Education/Life Skills - Involves educational sessions to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, abuse, gender violence, rights, climate change and other topical issues. Activities involve sport, drama, poetry, song, dance, discussion forum, advocacy and awareness sessions. (3) Community Projects - Youth clubs perform social responsibility activities at orphanages, institutions, public places.
