    Description
    Description

The Tree Planting Activity of Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) aims to promote environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, and community engagement through the restoration and enrichment of local ecosystems. This initiative seeks to increase forest cover, improve biodiversity, and contribute to carbon sequestration efforts while fostering environmental awareness and responsibility among students, faculty, staff, and partner stakeholders. The activity also strengthens collaboration with local government units (LGUs), DENR, and community organizations, aligning with national environmental policies and the university’s commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility. Ultimately, the initiative supports long-term ecological balance and cultivates a culture of stewardship within the SNSU community.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

The Tree Planting Activity of SNSU is implemented through a systematic and participatory approach consisting of planning, preparation, execution, and monitoring phases. During the planning stage, the university coordinates with partner agencies such as the City ENRO and DENR-SDN to identify suitable planting sites, secure seedlings, and obtain technical assistance. Formal requests and approvals are processed to ensure proper authorization and support for the activity . In the preparation phase, logistical arrangements are organized, including transportation, materials, and participant mobilization. A pre-activity orientation and briefing are conducted to educate participants on the importance of reforestation, proper planting techniques, and environmental stewardship . The implementation phase involves the actual planting of seedlings, where participants are grouped and assigned specific areas to ensure organized and efficient planting. Approximately 600 mangium seedlings are planted following proper spacing and planting standards to support healthy growth and sustainability . Finally, the monitoring and evaluation phase is conducted in coordination with partner agencies to assess the success of the activity, including survival rates of planted trees and overall environmental impact. Documentation, reporting, and photo evidence are compiled to ensure accountability and to guide future environmental initiatives.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The Tree Planting Activity of SNSU incorporates capacity-building and technology transfer through structured learning engagements and technical collaboration with partner agencies. Prior to the activity, participants undergo an orientation and hands-on briefing facilitated by experts from the City ENRO and DENR-SDN, focusing on proper tree planting techniques, site preparation, species selection, and environmental conservation practices . The initiative also promotes experiential learning by allowing students, faculty, and staff to apply these techniques directly in the field under the supervision of technical personnel. This ensures that knowledge is not only transferred but also practiced effectively, enhancing participants’ competencies in environmental management and reforestation. Furthermore, the partnership with organizations such as IIEE-SDN and JPSME strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing, integrating environmental practices with technical and professional expertise. Continuous engagement with partner agencies enables the university to adopt updated methodologies and best practices in sustainable land rehabilitation.

    Coordination mechanisms

The Tree Planting Activity of SNSU is governed through a multi-sectoral coordination approach led by the university, with active collaboration from government agencies and partner organizations. The initiative is formally organized through prior approvals and official communications, including requests for support and coordination with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-SDN) for provision of seedlings and technical assistance . Planning is carried out through pre-activity meetings and coordination with partner organizations such as IIEE-SDN and JPSME, where roles, responsibilities, and logistical requirements are clearly defined. An orientation and briefing are conducted before the activity to ensure participants are guided on proper planting techniques and environmental objectives . During implementation, coordination is maintained through designated team leaders overseeing logistics, participant management, and site operations, ensuring proper planting procedures and safety compliance. Post-activity, the initiative is jointly evaluated with partner agencies, focusing on outcomes such as the number of seedlings planted (600+) and the strengthening of institutional partnerships .
