Description
The project was first launched as a call to join an advocacy process to raise governments and their UN Ambassadors awareness of trade unions development cooperation and of SDGs centrality in the 2030 Agenda in order to have this reflected in the final SDG Summit statement of the Heads of State and Government who met in Sept. Following that activity, the action is now been deployed at local level in different countries to bridge national/local development and labour matters with the SDGs. Some punctual actions have been undertaken in Venezuela, Spain, Senegal, Morocco, Zambia, Finland and Argentina. However, the project is now in a phase of defining a broader amount of countries to pilot a more carry the action in a more focused and strategic way that would have a tripartite-scope, meaning that it would reach workers, employers and governments.
The project is steered by the Development Cooperation Unit of the Economic and Social Policies Department of the ITUC.
1. Decent work and SDG 8 are acknowledged by the social partners as central to achieve any truly sustainable development. Decent work is essential to achieve other goals.
2. Trade unions are acknowledged by the social partners as development actors and key contributors to devising and implementing development policies.
3. Trade unions are ackonwledged by the social-partners as vital partners to devise and implement successful transition plans that leave no one behind.
4. Social partners are open to shaping a new Social Contract that is based on the Decent Work Agenda and within which profit stops being a main objective but shift into a long-term sustainable approach to making business, employing people, producing, consuming and engaging with the communities where they are established.
