Description
Seeds & Stories is a women-led social enterprise officially launched in September 2021, when our constitution was unanimously approved and we registered as a community-based organisation in the village of Bigodi, Western Uganda. Our mission is to empower rural women through circular fashion and capacity building programs. Through nature-based solutions, we contribute to regenerative community development, gender equality, and environmental regeneration. Seeds and Stories is currently focused on developing quality hand-made products that support the livelihoods of women artisans in Bigodi, as well as new training programs that provide skills and environmental knowledge to the broader community. We celebrate Ugandan cultural heritage and traditional crafts connecting artisan production with contemporary design. Each of our products is made from a combination of local natural fibres and dyes, repurposed materials, modern designs, innovative methods and traditional techniques passed down through generations. Each Seeds & Stories product tells the story of the woman artisan that created it. Our production is 100% Ugandan, our women artisans are the heart and soul of our brand. We have been busy implementing a circular business model and regenerative approach, which allows us to provide more socio-economic opportunities and diversified sources of income to our artisan partners. Seeds & Stories wants to develop regional integrated fibre systems where natural fibres are sown, grown, harvested, processed, spun, naturally dyed, woven and sewn in Bigodi through regenerative practices. In this way, we can play an active role in restoring ecosystems, regenerating natural resources, creating meaningful livelihoods and helping build resilient communities. Our hope is that our organisation's work in Bigodi can serve as a pilot project, which can be adapted to other rural communities in Eastern Africa.
Our training programs are open to anyone from the community that would like to attend. Our vision is that by reviving and promoting the use of indigenous knowledge we can influence members of the broader community to be more resilient and self-reliant, healthy and equitable by providing them with the necessary skills, resources and facilitation. We employ the community members that attend our workshops, this provides local artisans with well-paid and flexible employment that strengthens their skill sets and upholds their cultural knowledge.
We provide vocational training programs to local women in the Bigodi community. We develop our training curriculum in consultation with local women, focusing on subjects that the women would like to learn and teach. Our training sessions are designed to provide participants with artisanal skills that result in new income-earning opportunities. As a result, local women are able to experience higher rates of financial independence, freedom to make choices, and a strong sense of self-worth. We also offer permaculture training that allows the community to address issues of food scarcity and environmental degradation, as well as literacy classes to help protect them against exploitation while buying and selling their products.
Our organisational structure involves a leadership team (co-founders) and an executive committee (women artisans). Our decision making is a collaborative process between the leadership team and the executive committee. Seeds & Stories is guided by the permaculture ethics Care of the Earth, Care of People and Future Care. Everything we do is underpinned by our core values of equity, active participation, transparency, diversity, and compassion.
We are building networks, partnerships and alliances with community leaders and key stakeholders who have experience and knowledge in particular areas such as permaculture, traditional crafts, biodiversity and conservation. We have recently signed an MoA with the Kibale Association for Rural and Environmental Development (KAFRED) which is a community-based organisation that aims to preserve the local environment while advancing health, education and economic growth in the wider local community. KAFRED uses ecotourism as a tool for promoting conservation and funding community development projects. We have also signed an MoA with TEXFAD which is a not-for-profit organisation that transforms agricultural banana waste into high-quality banana fibre textiles and handicrafts. TEXFAD is able to utilize natural resources sustainably while supporting job and wealth creation among youth and women in Uganda.
