Description
Our mission is to revolutionize the global fashion industry by implementing circular design principles. We are dedicated to reducing environmental impact through innovative design, industrial upcycling, recycling and transparent supply chains. By transforming waste into valuable resources, we aim to inspire systemic change, empowering communities and industries worldwide to adopt ethical and eco-conscious approaches. We also implement digital product passports (DPP) to show environmental impact (LCA) and transparency to the customer. Aus Design is a company focused on circular design whose innovative solutions have grown out of academic research. The company is actively engaged in the development of innovative technologies to reduce the environmental footprint of the fashion industry. The company also has a repair and return service in-house.
Our initiative is carried out through a comprehensive circular process, grounded in sustainable design principles and industrial upcycling. It begins with research, where we gather data on textile waste, material lifecycles, and production impacts. This informs our design phase, where we create products with longevity, recyclability, and minimal waste in mind.
Next, during product development, we incorporate industrial upcycling and recycling to reduce the environmental footprint. This is followed by production, where we conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) to measure the environmental impact of each item.
Post-production, we emphasize repair and local upcycling services, encouraging customers to extend the life of their garments. Through our take-back program, we accept used clothing, offering re-use options and further recycling of materials that have reached the end of their life cycle. This closed-loop system ensures that every stage of our process is focused on minimizing waste and supporting circularity in fashion.
A broad example is the Upmade upcycling system and certificate developed by Reet Aus, PhD, together with Stockholm Environmental Insitute, which teaches the factories how to circulate the generated waste back to production in-house. Industrial upcycling combined with recycling makes creating new products with a low environmental impact possible by valuing the material and making production waste-free.
Our initiative is governed through a horizontal management structure, which fosters collaboration and collective decision-making across all levels of the organization. This approach ensures that everyone, from designers to production teams, plays an active role in shaping the brand’s direction and sustainability efforts.
We work closely with the Sustainable Design and Materials Laboratory at the Estonian Academy of Arts, where we engage in ongoing research and development to innovate in sustainable design and materials. This partnership allows us to leverage cutting-edge technologies and methodologies for reducing textile waste and environmental impact.
Additionally, we coordinate with various production companies globally that specialize in upcycling, recycling, and eco-friendly manufacturing. These partnerships help ensure that our industrial processes align with our environmental goals, including the reduction of waste and carbon emissions at every stage of the supply chain.
By integrating research, collaboration, and sustainable practices across our partnerships, we ensure our initiative is governed with transparency, innovation, and a strong commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
We prioritize measuring the reduction of textile waste and overall environmental impact through various critical assessments. One key metric is the amount of textile waste diverted from landfills through our industrial upcycling and recycling processes. We continuously track and analyze the volume of pre- and post-consumer textiles we recover and repurpose in our production cycle.
Additionally, we perform a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on our products, which gives us a detailed understanding of the environmental impact across the entire product lifespan—from material sourcing to end-of-life. This includes assessments of energy consumption, water usage, and carbon emissions. Our take-back program and repair & local upcycling services provide further insights into how we extend garment lifecycles and reduce waste.
We also engage in UPMADE audits and certifications to validate our sustainability claims, ensuring transparency and accountability. These evaluations allow us to set benchmarks and continuously improve the environmental and social impact of our operations.
