Description
The roots of the brand evolved around creating ready to make clothing from a haute couture inspiration of European handmade laces which is a craft on the verge of extinction. Being a female founded brand, underprivileged communities of craft women were a focus group in supply chain as a matter community empowerment. The founder selected women from the southern coastal region of Sri Lanka as the core asset of her supply chain. From inception, the brand champions "slow fashion" over "fast fashion" to create positive impacts on the planet. The materials go through a handpicked selection process where being a factory overrun has the highest impact to be selected over aesthetic appeal. The upcycling of the material happens through washes with natural material or surface design using suitable transfers over highly pollutant screen prints. Our next phase of growth is designed around individual consumer-centric epicycle of the wardrobe supported by e-commerce.
Under the leadership of our founder/creative director the raw materials are being picked from the overruns of the previous season. Our design to delivery process covers 9-12 months where we use communities with women who are highly skilled and work on the product whilst supporting their families. We produce few units from a style, eliminating dumping or discounting and with higher aesthetic appeal. We use down time of our other industrial supply chain partners to create less impact of over working / production.
Mainstream apparel retail is still governed by deep discount or fast fashion brands. Seasonal downtime, liability stocks, obsolescence are common traits. We use the supply chain already plagued with above adverse traits to scale up, coupled with newest technology to make less impact on the planet. Our motto is creating more opportunities and less harm.
Our supply chain partners are a handful of players who believe in sustainability as a mechanism of enabling growth. We have 100% visibility into each and every material or process used in making the clothes. Every step of the product and the process is documented and available for reference (from sketch, tech pack, patterns, BOM etc).
The supply chain traceability of our product and its life cycle.
Brooklyn Lace Guild promoting craft and its applicability in the modern day, Responsible Tourism Partnership (at the inception) to identify and community link up in Sri Lankan "Dutch handmade lace weavers" in the southern coastal region, Brushes and Needles (Pvt) Ltd to supply raw materials from factory overruns
