Description
Decarbonising commercial road transport, is essential to achieve global climate goals, including those set out in the 2016 Paris Agreement. More than 65 million heavy-duty buses, coaches and trucks worldwide move people and goods, rising to 100 million vehicles by 2050. They run a wide variety of services, over long and short distances and in urban and rural areas. Sustainable development nevertheless is dependent on well-functioning road transport. Mobility networks bring people to the places they need to be and supply chains bring essential goods to those who need them. Our greatest challenge therefore is to effectively reduce CO2 emissions in commercial road transport to net zero by 2050, while maintaining the economic prosperity and social integration that road transport underpins. Green Compact is a collective global action to achieve carbon neutrality in commercial road transport services by 2050. IRU’s Green Compact will create a roadmap to achieve carbon neutral commercial road transport by 2050. It is a pledge by IRU members, the broader industry and its stakeholders to reduce and eventually eliminate CO2 emissions. The Green Compact is a set of key principles based on IRU’s decarbonisation vision, including required action by governments to implement these five decarbonisation pillars: 1. Broad implementation of low and zero carbon fuels 2. More efficient and digital logistics 3. Increased use of collective passenger transport with buses and coaches 4. More efficient and latest vehicle technologies 5. Improved driving behaviour through training and education Structured into five pillars of work, the Compact maps collective action from industry and government on new technology and infrastructure, modified operational practices and better collective services for transport users. Each pillar can be adapted by policy makers and stakeholders to maximise their decarbonisation impact in each region of the world. Work in each pillar aims to reduce CO2 emissions by a certain amount over each year up to 2050. Indicators for each pillar will help measure and guide progress. 2021 will focus on designing how the Green Compact will be delivered from now to 2050. This includes refining the methodology, developing a draft working programme for each pillar, and building an alliance of stakeholders to contribute to the Green Compact. Following this initial design, three key phases will build evidence, test proposals and scale up implementation in 2022, 2023 and 2024. During the evidence gathering phase; research reports, metrics, indicator sets and best case examples will be collected and created. During the test phase; the metrics and indicator sets will be tested by case studies, field report and the creation of a knowledge hub. The implementation phase will mainly prescribed the different regional and sectoral actions needed to achieve carbon neutrality. By 2025, the Green Compact will run on an annual cycle that will assess progress, report on indicators, and drive best practices across the industry globally.
