About Us: The Gender and STI Workstream
Championing Gender Equality in Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development. We are the Gender and Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Workstream, a dedicated component of the United Nations Interagency Task Team on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals. Established in 2018, our core mission is to ensure that STI serves as a powerful catalyst for achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls globally.
Our Vision:
We envision a world where science, technology, and innovation are inherently gender-responsive, where women and girls are equal creators, users, beneficiaries, and leaders in all STI fields, and where technological advancements drive inclusive and equitable sustainable development for all.
Our Mission:
The Gender and STI Workstream works to:
· Spotlight gender and STI initiatives across the UN system: including policies, programmes, and flagship projects.
· Promote and facilitate inter-agency collaboration to leverage STI for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, addressing key challenges and harnessing opportunities.
· Advocate for gender-inclusive STI initiatives, including through joint events, briefings and knowledge products.
· Generate, consolidate, and disseminate knowledge, evidence, and good practices on the intersection of gender and STI to inform policy and action.
· Foster partnerships with Member States, civil society, academia, the private sector, and other stakeholders to foster STI ecosystems that support all women and girls.
Why This Matters:
Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but also a critical driver for sustainable development. Science, technology, and innovation hold immense potential to accelerate progress, create new opportunities, and solve complex global challenges. However, without a deliberate focus on gender equality, STI can inadvertently perpetuate or even exacerbate existing inequalities.
By ensuring that STI development and deployment are inclusive and equitable, we can unlock the full potential of women and girls as innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders, thereby fostering more resilient, prosperous, and sustainable societies for everyone.
Join Us:
The Gender and STI Workstream is committed to working collaboratively to harness the transformative power of science, technology, and innovation for a more gender-equal world. We invite fellow UN entities, Member States, and all stakeholders to engage with us in this vital endeavour. Email: itu.newyork@itu.int

Initiatives
Partner organizations across the United Nations System have joined forces to address the gender gap in science, technology, and innovation (STI) by forming the Interagency Task Team (IATT) workstream on Gender and STI (WS8). The yearly flagship publication highlights initiatives from 15 UN entities under WS8 of the IATT. These diverse initiatives are led by UN agencies creating gender-sensitive and women-centered solutions to advance sustainable development.
From leveraging fintech to financially empower women to capacity-building efforts increasing the number of women in nuclear science, the initiatives showcase innovative approaches paving the way for a more peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. These undertakings aim to empower women and girls in the field of STI through various actions, including capacity-building, information sharing, policy-setting, and awareness-raising. SDG 5 on Gender Equality serves as a cross-cutting enabler for achieving the 2030 Agenda.
