Description
Our objective is to raise awareness of the finite resources and encourage sustainability via creativity and advocate for the emancipation of women of all segments of society. ZUKA has three branches - ZUKA Accessories (fashion), ZUKA BOOKS (literature) and ZUKAST (podcast). All three work together to create economic cycles for women, encourage sustainable practices and efficient utilization of resources and push for creative space in a patriarchal society.
ZUKA Accessories was set up to create a system of connecting communities and creating a cycle of economic empowerment for impoverished, marginalised, female artisans. Sourcing indigenous fabric which is at risk of going extinct (handwoven muslin, handloomed cotton and jute) these are adorned with the ancient craft of blockprinted designs which effectively reduces water usage in preparation of the product. Capacity development is conducted via technical assistance and training enabling our artisans to not just learn new skills but have the confidence to work independently as well. ZUKA BOOKS is an act of cultural resistance whereby female authors in particular are encouraged to write on the female experience in all contexts. Bodies, minds, identities are all explored through art and knowledge creation is created via documentation of fashion and culture through the written word. ZUKAST is a podcast where advocacy is the goal through awareness raising conversations with people involved in sustainability such as international organisation such as Coca Cola, fashion brands like BanoEemee and of course, farmers and manufacturers associated with cotton crop production and more. It is then uploaded on digital platforms for amplification purposes.
In all three, especially ZUKA Accessories, capacity building takes place in two ways: 1. Technical development. This includes training artisans (who often belong to persecuted religious minorities) at a safe training centre which is easily accessible for them ensuring that they learn a variety of stitching techniques from our master trainer. 2. Creative exploration. Once basic techniques regarding stitching and embroidery have been taught, training is then delivered on the basis of colour combinations and patterns. These include drawing, transfer onto fabric from paper and colouring techniques. For ZUKA BOOKS, the emphasis is on knowledge creation and sharing. This is done via sustainable production of books that address timely issues with the aim of dismantling the patriarchy in a very conservative and strict society while pushing for creative space. The technological aspect comes in the creative process - for example, ZUKA BOOKS published the country's first digital graphic novel about emotional breakdown in women post-divorce. Via ZUKAST, digital literacy is a huge element whereby we offer a platform for people to get involved and share their thoughts on sustainability. In a country where digital access is luxury, the creation of content on a topic about sustainability raises awareness and the outreach via apps and digitally created content encourages technological advancement and creativity.
ZUKA is not hierarchal. All stakeholders have a say in the creative process whether they are our artisans who learn skills on the job; our authors who write books about the female experience; our co-host and guests who come onto the podcast to talk about sustainability. Everyone is encouraged to share ideas and thoughts and freedom of thought, creativity and speech is allowed to flow freely. All work is done with priority given to health (physical, mental, emotional). Demand does not define the output, the output defines the creative process.

With ZUKA Accessories, our beneficiaries are our artisans who earn as they learn. Our research has shown that 91% of the income earned goes into running their homes, educating children all of which enables them to become decision makers in their homes. For a patriarchal society such a role is coveted and to have an equal say in the home is a powerful step for progress.
