We are the Wrestling League of the State of Rio de Janeiro - LWERJ, a non-governmental organization that promotes human development and social inclusion through sport, our project consists of teaching wrestling for children and adults.
Description
In the year 2019 we will be carrying out three social projects: FIGHTING FOR LIFE, FIGHT FOR ALL, and FIGHT AT SCHOOL. In addition to the social projects we are conducting the training of coaches and we will be conducting at least 6 annual wrestling competitions. The focus of our work is children residing in poor places who do not have access to services provided by the state, but we are available to anyone who is interested. The classes are coordinated by coaches and former athletes such as: Tania Regina, Flavio Cabral and Cassio Bernardo.
We believe that wrestling has fundamentals like Respect, equality and fair-play, some of the core values in this sport are also fundamental principles for peaceful and inclusive societies.Beyond these points, We understand that wrestling and physical activity reduce the risk of contracting non-communicable diseases by strengthening cardiovascular health in particular. Indeed we believe that the popularity and positive attitude towards the praticing of wrestling make it a suitable tool for tackling inequality in areas and populations that are difficult to reach. Day by day we realize that the sport can promote equality and can serve as a platform to promote the value of diversity. In a country where women suffer from gender bias such as Brazil, we consider that sport, specifically the wrestling, can help to foster gender equality in countries and regions where women are discriminated. In the FIGHT FOR LIFE´s project 30% of the people benefiting from the project being female. We intend to increase the number of women participating in our activities through campaigns. In our training and activities, women receive equal and very respectful treatment. Currently our president is a woman who was a former wrestling fighter, her name is Tania Regina Costa da Silva, and we believe she is an example for future generations of fighters we are forming. Another very important result that we obtained with the development of wrestling for women was the appearance of our two champion Fabiana Alcantara and Dailane Reis. Dailane, among her many titles, has as main achievements the bronze medal in the World Military Championship in the year 2018 and was South American champion in 2017. The LWERJ believes that through the wrestling we can cause positive shifts in gender norms and promote gender equality. The LWERJ is convincede that through the Wrestling we can promote the use of public spaces where diverse populations and marginalized community members can interact and create friendly relations. In an attempt to spread the sport in the best possible way we develop partnerships with institutions that have the same purposes as ours, we can cite as our main work partners: Niteroi fire brigade; Police of Niteroi; Pacifying Police Unit (UPP - Jacarezinho); DEGASE RJ (General Department of Socioductive Actions); Federal University Fluminense (UFF); Jequia Club; Marine team of Brazil; and Sport Project of Rio de Janeiro.
Our wrestling development work takes place all year round. In several regions of Rio de Janeiro, we conduct free training with the purpose of publicizing and popularizing wrestling, especially for children living in poor communities. In addition, we also conduct high-performance training for adolescents and adults. In the year 2019 we will be carrying out three social projects: FIGHTING FOR LIFEÂ (LUTANDO PELA VIDA); FIGHT FOR ALLÂ (LUTA PARA TODOS) and FIGHT AT SCHOOL (LUTA NA ESCOLA).FIGHTING FOR LIFEÂ is a project focused on the development covers 100 people and it is a project that covers people of all ages and aims to attract people to healthy sports. We believe that wrestling is an excellent outlet for obtaining a healthy mind and a healthy body.FIGHT FOR ALLÂ is a project that is already underway and will cover 120 children aged 7 to 17 living in poor communities. The project seeks to stimulate the practice of sport in children by making them gain quality of life and become champions. FIGHT AT SCHOOLÂ is a project that is already being implemented and will cover 216 children aged 7 to 17 years students of public schools. Our goal with this project is to engage kids in wrestling and absorb the values and principles of wrestling and make kids spend more time in school. We believe that sport, physical education, physical activity and play can motivate children and young people to attend school and become more involved with education, seeking to make children away from the use of drugs or alcohol. This is an innovative project never before realized in Brazil. This project will convey the teachings of wrestling within the school environment. In addition to sports training, we are conducting courses to train professionals as wrestling coaches, these courses are conducted by the president and coach Tania Regina da Costa and coach Flavio Cabral.
Our project has revealed the first pan-American champion of Greco Romana do Brasil in the cadet category and also in the junior category. Our project revealed athletes such as Felipe do Vabo Macedo (a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games), Joilson de Brito (three-time Pan American Junior champion - 2016,2017,2018), Fabiana Alcântara (Champion of the South American Youth Games 2013), Dailane Reis (Brazilian champion; South American wrestling Champion – 2017; 3rd place in the South American Games Championship - 2018) e Andre Pinto (3rd place in the World University Championship - 2018).
We work with the needy community so often we come across situations of shooting or police operations. Many times we deal with children who have problems with drugs and we always try to show them that sports and healthy living are the best way. We have financial difficulties because we do not have a sponsor and all our money is used to carry out competitions or to carry out the social project. Our problems are solved through the dedication and commitment of the members of LWERJ and our collators who work for free.
Our work is aimed primarily at children who are not having access to any physical activity and live in risk-controlled areas of trafficking. We believe that the values of wrestling can transform these lives and make new champions come true.
We true believe that the spirit of wrestling can reinforcing competencies and values such as cooperation, fair-play and goal-setting. The LWERJ regard as true that we need to fight with the aspiration of leaving no one behind and maximizing the contribution of sport for a better and peaceful world. We believe that the LWERJ can be a bridge between governments and different vulnerable groups in society, we are working exactly in this direction. We think that wrestling can contribe for the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and contribute to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives. The LWERJ acknowledges that sport is an important enabler of sustainable development and a concrete tool for development goals related to gender equality, social inclusion, peace and justice. We are facing this challenge of demonstrating how our work is being developed according to 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) as an opportunity for more and people to know our work and join us in this journey.
