STC raises awareness of these to policy makers, media, fleet managers, and the general public. STC events have increased demand for these safety features and have encouraged governments to adopt relevant UN global vehicle standards so that the technologies eventually become a regulatory requirement for new vehicles.
STC was launched in Brasilia, Brazil on the occasion of the 2nd Global Ministerial Conference on 18-19 November 2015. The Ministerial meeting carried out a mid-term review of the UN Decade and highlighted priorities for action to 2020 and beyond. Subsequently, in each year, two major global STC events have been and are being organised. In 2016, there were two large-scale demonstration events held in Santiago, Chile and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with a number of smaller events held during the year. In 2017, the first global event was held in Bangkok, Thailand in support of UN Global Road Safety Week, with the second global event planned for Shanghai, China in October. <br />

The locations for the global STC events are selected in consultation with the board partners, with focus being on countries that have significant vehicle production, a lack of vehicle safety regulations and high road trauma rate to ensure maximum impact. At each event, live demonstrations of the technologies are carried out, and parallel safety seminars to discuss how to accelerate vehicle safety developments in the local regions are held. <br />
For each STC event, local partners and vehicle manufacturers are engaged to help with the set up and running of the event to help build capacity in the local region. In addition, local media are invited and take part in the events to help educate them on the importance of the technologies and to ensure the topic of vehicle safety will continue to be discussed in the region after the event is over.
STC is governed by a board consisting of representatives from each of the partner organisations, with Global NCAP acting as the secretariat for the initiative. The board meets a minimum of two times a year to plan and discuss upcoming activities. Two global STC events are held each year, with a number of smaller local STC events held throughout the year as the opportunity arises. <br />

Each partner makes a financial or in kind contribution to the initiative, and also provides technical expertise and support on site at the events. <br />
