(
Non-governmental organization (NGO)
)
#OceanAction43513
Description
This MPA will cover 30% of EEZ based on a Diagnostic Analysis Technical Document, including 200 reports elaborated with the participation of 250 scientists and technicians, and 45 institutions -FREPLATA (www.freplata.org). The area has high ecological value and biologically essential for marine balance, to safeguard nesting and provide space for breeding fish to replenish neighbouring fishing grounds. The identification of relevant elements can be identified as critical areas for the conservation of biodiversity (SEMARNAT, 2006, Leathwick et al., 2008, Chavez Gonzalez et al., 2015).
This proposal was discussed since 2018 and uploaded in July 2019 to the major government authorities with the support of a leadership team of Transatlantic marine protected areas MedPAN (European Commission) and presented a concept note draft to the main National Environmental Direction Protected Areas authorities. The result was positive and the next process will involve fisheries companies, a plenty participation process, including marine scientific data upload and secure financial support. The model will a co-management together marine users, fisheries companies to protect and restore marine biodiversity as a whole integrated system. The area will be promoting as a Reserve of interest for fisheries and will start to take actions urgently to avoid the collapse of fish stocks as well as avoid and reject the IUU fishing (Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated) and shark finning, included in a national voluntary report made by OCC to Ocean Conference. MPA's together with the Sanctuary will promote sustainable fisheries as the only option for the marine biodiversity conservation, and food subsistence for people.
