Description
In the national Green Deal, the central government and the Dutch maritime sector have laid down an ambition that goes beyond the agreements made in IMO with regard to CO2 reduction. In the light of the European Green Deal and the resulting initiatives, the government has previously expressed its commitment to the objective of climate neutrality by 2050. In line with this, the Ministry also wants to work towards climate-neutral shipping in 2050 for international shipping. In the announced revision of the IMO climate strategy in 2023, the Netherlands will focus on a similar global ambition. To make shipping more sustainable, the Ministry is focusing on three tracks: 1) The transition to sustainable energy carriers; 2) Stimulating investment in innovation and development; (3) Market-oriented measures. To achieve this, the Dutch maritime sector, together with Dutch knowledge institutions, has presented the Maritime Master Plan with the aim of putting the Netherlands at the forefront of making shipping more sustainable. The plan focuses, among other things, on research into and development of clean technologies, sustainable launching customership by the Rijksrederij and the navy, and the construction of emission-free civil ships. The goal of the plan is to have 50 emission-free ships in service by 2030, of which 10 from the Rijksrederij and 10 from the navy. The remaining 30 will be civilian ships. The entire plan (€ 365 million euro) has been submitted by the Ministry of Defence, also on behalf of the Ministries of Infrastructure and Water Management and Economic Affairs for co-financing by the Growth Fund.
