    Description
    Description

MINKA community is a citizen science observatory contributing to reach the sustainable development goals concerning SDG 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17 supporting data collection for research. The observations are realised by trained volunteers or organisations dedicated to the environmental protection, the observations are validated by experts and will reach the “Research grade” in citizen science. These observations will be uploaded to global repositories for will be used in investigation studies. Every observation can help pave the way to a more sustainable future and therefore the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all UN Member States in 2015. Objectives of MINKA: - to enhance the data collection in different Essential Ocean Variables (EOB) and biodiversity in land and sea. - to improve the ocean literacy and the understand of biodiversity in citizen - to support decision makers and partitioners in the management through data fostering science- based decisions

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

At now the main parameter evaluated is the biodiversity therefore the protocol applied is bases on photo reporting of the species found in the specific environments sea or land (snorkel and scuba diving in water and trekking in nature) The experts of CSIC will check and confirm the species identified in the geolocalization indicated, just when the species is confirmed by 3 experts can be accepted. At now the projects of the volunteers are implementing more Essential Ocean Variables (EOV) with water temperature, Ph or marine litter with different protocols.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Several training courses are realized by the ICM- CSIC directly to volunteers or to the organisations participating in. In term of technology transfer the information and data are distribuited at three different level: 1 validated data distribuite at the main repository platform for scientific (EDMOnet, GIBF); 2 to scientific community, decision makers and practitioners in the framework of congress seminar and specific workshops; 3 to volunteers by means simplified reports ans event target for general public. In the framework of this third point the ICM CSIC is working in DIY low cost tools for data collection associated with water sports (snorkel, sail, diving and surf) to train and involve water sports community in the in citizen science .

    Coordination mechanisms

The coordination of the observatory is realised by EMBIMOS research group of the Institut de Ciencies del Mar (ICM-CSIC) belonging to Spanish National Council of Research (CSIC) that with support of Quanta SME ensure the IT services and and connections with international data repositories edmonent, gibf and other. Furthermore the Cisc check evaluate and support the volunteers in their activities and species identification. The organizations (school, ngos, municipalities) could open a project about monitoring of a specific environmental parameter. The organisations manage and support directly volunteers and the CSIC in this case will support directly the organisations.

    Evaluation

The evaluation of the processes and the data analysis are realized by the EMBIMOS research group of the ICM CSIC supported by the Quanta team for IT and technological solutions.

    Partners

Several stakeholders collaborating in MINKA the Citizen Science Observatory collecting data, in the framework of the platfomr is possible to create projects in a specific geographical area focusing on biodiversity in the zone. Several organizations such as NGOs or water sports federation (e.g. divers) are collecting photos of biodiversity with MINKA.
