Description
The Mediterranean Blue Living Lab Network is a strategic regional infrastructure aimed at accelerating the sustainable transition of Mediterranean coastal and island communities through locally tailored, co-designed solutions. Rooted in the experience and partnerships developed under the BlueMissionMed initiative, this network will now flourish as a concrete, long-term action thanks to Italy’s proposal of voluntary commitment.
Designed to respond directly to the needs of territories, the Network will support real-life testing of nature-based solutions, circular economy models, sustainable maritime activities, and pollution prevention systems. By embedding innovation in the social, environmental, and economic fabric of Mediterranean communities, it will help deliver tangible results for ecosystem restoration, blue jobs, and community resilience.
The initiative will also serve as a platform for cooperation across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, aligning public institutions, research bodies, and private stakeholders around a shared operational framework. Endorsed by Greece and expected to grow through the engagement of other Mediterranean countries, the Network offers a pragmatic tool to translate political intent into action, contributing to the objectives of the New Mediterranean Pact and global ocean targets.
Born from the EU Mission Ocean and Waters, the Blue Living Lab Network now extends its reach, becoming a Mediterranean driver of innovation, solidarity, and transformation.
Lead Entity:
• Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) (Government) – Italy’s lead governmental body responsible for announcing and initiating the commitment through in-kind contribution, coordinating national involvement and strategic alignment.
