    Description
    Intro

Our SDG6 good practice is about addressing the world's pressing water and sanitation challenges in areas that do not have any access to water or septic tank or sewage treatment plant with our sustainable sanitation solution, branded as ECOLOO. We have established ECOLOO MALAYSIA, an impact driven social enterprise, to develop sustainable solutions such as ECOLOO, a stand-alone, decentralized, biological toilet technology that is eco-friendly, odorless, waterless, sewage-less, energy free, hassle free and maintenance free.

We produce ECOLOO in Malaysia in sustainable manner, R&D, market, sell, rent and lease our sustainable solutions, create awareness and training programs on WASH, environment, sustainability, SDGs and circular economy. With global presence in 25 countries today, we will continue to contribute to achieve the SDGs with our sustainable practice. ECOLOO is a sustainable toilet that employs special formula to terminate bad odor, treat and break down solid waste into tiny particles, converts liquid waste into natural fertilizer, perfect for organic farming. This by-product is odor free, pathogen free and rich with nutrients. ECOLOO is made of fibre reinforced plastic (FRP), light yet durable, can be easily adapted, installed, moved and maintained. The practice is totally sustainable and can easily be adopted and replicated, which can later create business and job opportunities to the local communities through inclusive social business. ECOLOO can be installed independently in remote areas, national park, heritage sites, hill side, river bank, water falls, islands, lakes, beaches, trains, buses, boats or floating houses in any climate condition.

ECOLOO not only saves lives, water and environment but also eliminate poverty and improve education quality with better focus. Our contributions to the society, health and environment have been recognized as unique, iconic, innovative and strategic by the United Nations Foundation, UNWTO, CNN Going Green, Swedish Energy Agency, Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), International Federation of Inventors Associations (IFIA), WSSCC, OFEED, Solar Impulse Foundation, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Energy Globe in Austria, MaGIC Malaysia, China Tourist Association & Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, GCIP, Mercy Mission, World CSR Congress Council in India and World Invention and Innovation Forum in China among others.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

Since 2010 until today, over 2,500 toilets have been installed in over 25 countries across 5 continents. Some of the projects/activities implemented include:

    Results/Outputs/Impacts

The impact for adopting practice with ECOLOO would be social, health, environmental and circular economic. Some of the evidence-based ECOLOO's success stories arising from the practice include:

2019-2020: installation of ECOLOOs in Cook Islands to promote biodiversity conservation, save the islands from being polluted caused by sewage and boost tourism industry in the islands (SDG3, 6, 11, 13)

2016&2019: installation of 10 ECOLOOs in each year in Chile for the public to use and to save the beaches from being polluted and upon building structures from used wooden planks, our partner received a grant awarded by the Government for being innovative (SDG3, 6, 9, 11, 13)

2016-2017: installation of 10 ECOLOOs at UNESCO World Heritage sites in Jordan in 2 consecutive years, in a collaboration with UNDP Jordan, to promote the biodiversity conservation of Dibbeen Reserve, Rum Reserve and Petra Archaeological Park in Jordan; ECOLOO saves them from losing the title given by UNESCO, revives the tourism industry and the businesses around the sites, saves over 10 million liters of water within one year when water is expensive in Jordan (SDG3, 6, 11, 13)

2017: installation of 10 ECOLOOs at Kuala Lumpur SEA GAMES, in collaboration with Malaysian Ministry of Youth & Sports, helped the Government save around 150,000 liters of water (SDG3, 6, 11, 13)

2016: installation of 2 ECOLOOs in a 2-storey floating lab belong to the University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) who conducted research on the water of the Kenyir Lake, Malaysia helps prevent the lake from being polluted (SDG3, 6, 11, 13)

2018-2019: installation of 20 ECOLOOs in 2 girl schools in Sierra Leone, in collaboration with Hope2Overcome NGO, help improve the girls' attendance and performance by 35% and provides them with safe places to exercise sanitary hygiene with dignity (SDG3, 4, 6, 11, 13)

2015: installation of 50 ECOLOOs inside Gers in Ulaanbatar, Mongolia for the poor communities that prevents the families from using outdoor toilets especially during winter which temperature drops to -50 Degrees Celcius (SDG3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13)

2014: deployment of ECOLOOs in Takloban City, the Phillippines, in collaboration with Philippines Disaster Relief Foundation, supports disaster relief efforts and prevents water-borne diseases from spreading further after the typhoon (SDG3, 6, 11, 13)

2014: installation of ECOLOOs in events and schools in Kenya that helps retain the event visitors longer and kids attend and focus in classes (SDG3, 4, 6, 11, 13)

2010: installation of ECOLOO for public in collaboration with the Municipality of Stromstad in Sweden to protect the lake from being polluted, to provide amenities for the visitors to use particularly during Summer vacation and to fertilize the garden with the natural fertilizer (SDG3, 6, 11, 13)

2010: installation of 160 ECOLOOs at the famous Boom Festival in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal saves estimated 4.6 million liters of water, assuming each of the 24,000 visitors used one of the ECOLOOs on the site at least 5 times a day (SDG3, 6, 9, 13) Lessons learned: people appreciate odor free toilets, our fertilizer can be valuable and beneficial to the farmers, can substitute chemical fertilizer, the practice can provide passive income to the poor who owns/manages toilets for public use.

    Enabling factors and constraints

The enabling factors that helped the practice to succeed other than the toilet technology itself were the teamwork by ECOLOO team, the UNDP staff and the local community that we hired temporarily. There were constraints such as the delay in the arrival of shipment due to unforeseen circumstances, the logistics and the communication challenges during the transportation of goods (ECOLOO) to the destinations but we managed to overcome all the challenges and accomplished our mission, regardless. Despite the costly trip for us due to the delay in shipment arrival after we arrived earlier that the ETA of goods, we used the time to gather resources needed to identify locations, transport the toilets to each destination, install the toilets and the structures as we communicate across.

    Sustainability and replicability

The outcome of sustainable practice with ECOLOO has proven to be effective, practical and sustainable, be it in remote or urban areas, hot and cold climate, disaster relief or refugee camps based on our success stories. After CNN interview and broadcast ECOLOO worldwide in October 2019 just before the pandemic happened, we have received many emails to inquire about our solution and to invite us to present our solution to their government, key leaders and decision makers and to convince them to deploy our solution and save their environment before it is too late. We realized that the demand for our solution is huge and this practice can be replicated to support the SDG implementation in those places/countries.

We plan to extend our practice more widely and encourage adoption of our practice across the rural communities and schools in the following countries, particularly those leaders whom have started to initiate toilet revolution and open defecation free such as: - Nigeria - Lesotho - Pakistan - India - Nepal - Maldives - Middle East - Latin America - ASEAN countries We believe we could easily replicate our production and create inclusive social business in those countries by transferring the know how through PPP, one country at a time. We plan to create awareness and provide training programs on technical skills, character building, financial building and sustainable business to create a circular economy for sustainable society.

    COVID-19 Impact

COVID-19 has impacted the implementation of this practice as we are not able to travel and to present in those countries who wish to collaborate with ECOLOO MALAYSIA. The only way to mitigate is to make sure that business is strategized while production is running, technology is improved, efficiency of bacteria is improved and more toilet designs are put in the pipeline. On the other hand, we have also received an outstanding award by International Federation of Inventors Association (IFIA) for ECOLOO vs COVID-19 as our practice stops the virus from spreading further because of our decentralized system. Therefore, we strongly believe that practice with ECOLOO can support in efforts to building back better from COVID-19 impacts, especially during the medical emergency relief, other than other disaster relief.
