Conservation Practices for Sustainable Livelihood

(
Non-governmental organization (NGO)
)
#SDGAction43235
    Description
    Description
    This initiative aims to cope with the challenges of climate change, water scarcity, other conservation issues, poverty, unemployment, loss of the eco-traditional or indigenous knowledge and customs; revive eco-traditional approaches to conserving natural resources; and engage the nexgen and inherited skill of the community in livelihood generation.

    Based on the Eco-Centric Indian cultural concepts of Aranya Sanskriti (Forest Culture) and Prakriti Purush (Nature & Man), we adopted the method from the existing conservation practices of each target site on the principle, "Conservation Practices for Sustainable Livelihood". The site-specific approach has a global application to cope up the modern challenges. It links traditional knowledge and skills with income generation, thus, minimizing the inputs and efforts for maximum impact. Based on the above approach, challenges are identified, and the entry point is decided accordingly. Since water is the prime concern, we mobilize every section of the community with the key focus of improving water conditions.

    We apply structural intervention through social intervention with monthly follow up meetings with the identified groups of women SHGs, farmers groups, and children clubs. The issues, and associated activities continue in an integrated manner.
    Expected Impact

    The Site-specific Socio-ecological Models include:
    1. The Abu Model, which linked the conservation of habitat and protection of a globally important bird species, the Green Avadavat (Amandava formosa), with the livelihoods of the local youth, resulted in a tenfold increase in the population of this bird species at Abu Hills from 2004 to date (2019).
    2. The Bharatpur (Chak Ramnagar) Model linked the revival of and ecological set up around World Heritage & Ramsar Site - Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur (Rajasthan, India) with the livelihoods of the women of the local indigenous group (i.e., Banjara community).
    3. Additionally, the Chambal and Kumbhalgarh Models are in the initial stages of development for protection and conservation.

    In total, RSNH has intervened with a number of structural activities by creating over 100 structures to harvest water and conserve soil-water moisture. RSNH also engaged in social activities with all the sections of the rural communities in Rajasthan. To date, our interventions harvest over 10 billion liters of rainwater and benefit the populations of over fifty villages with a total of around 0.1 million residents along with an immeasurable impact on the improvement of the ecological profile with respect to local flora and fauna.
