Description
Cellsense, utilizes algae and regenerated cellulose to develop interactive embellishments that create new possibilities for designers while eliminating microplastics and unethical labor practices. By encapsulating green fluorescent protein derived from the Aequorea Victoria jellyfish, our embellishments exhibit bioluminescence. This visual effect fosters a unique bond between consumers and the beads, portraying the material as a living entity rather than disposable commodity. To address labor issues in the embroidery industry, we've developed a hydrophobic 3D-printed bead loom and an automated pipetting system. This technology facilitates the efficient assembly of large-scale beaded panels, significantly reducing production time, cost, and manual labor. Additionally, by utilizing the biochemical charges associated with cellulose fibers, we align them around 3D anodes, creating a batch of bio-embellishments in under 5 minutes; demonstrating economic scalability of a biological material for global impact.
Our process began by conducting interviews with Indian karigars, who labor strenuously for up to 17 hours a day, revealing an urgent need for innovation in the embellishment industry. We also recognized the environmental footprint of petroleum-derived beads that reside in landfills indefinitely and are difficult to extract due to their size. Our research led us to design a solution that addresses material, environmental, and labor issues. Prototyping: We focused on sustainable algae-derived biopolymers, and conducted over 130 tests to perfect our formula. We faced challenges with inconsistent color retention to address this we extracted microcrystalline cellulose from textile waste, which enhanced color stability and mechanical strength of the beads. Fabrication: We designed a 3D-printed bead loom and automated pipetting system for efficient production. Our process can handle six colors simultaneously for intricate designs. Strategic Collaborations - We've drawn interest from over 15 + fashion and jewelry brands, and our immediate goal is to solidify partnerships and launch collaborative projects within the year. So far we have launched partnerships with 2 jewelry and 1 fashion brand. A key objective is scaling to meet this new demand, we are upgrading our equipment and bead loom technology to enhance throughput and automation levels.
Cellsense prioritizes sharing insights on sustainable, ethical material practices through our website and Instagram, ensuring wide outreach. Our founder, Aradhita Parasrampuria, actively shares her expertise in sustainable design practices via panel discussions and podcasts. We have also showcased Cellsense bio-embellishments at various exhibitions and conferences, for in-person community engagement.
We have worked with labs to test our material properties and validate biodegradability of our embellishments.

Cellsense's bio-embellishments positively impact customers, designers, producers, soil ecology, and water systems. We're eliminating microplastic pollution by replacing plastic embellishments in the design and cosmetic industry with sustainable alternatives. Our use of textile waste to produce cellulose, which is one of our primary raw materials, aims to make the fashion industry closed-loop. In cosmetics, our bio-beads can replace plastic microbeads found in cleaning products, a single cleaning product can contain upto 360,000 plastic microbeads. Through our automated production technology, we also address labor issues in the industry, providing a safer and more ethical working environment.
