Description
Philippines Blue Swimming Crab: Since a SFW Red rating of the BSC fishery in 2018, the Global Programs team has collaborated closely with a variety of stakeholders in the Philippines to improve the environmental performance of the blue swimming crab fishery and address key issue areas such as: ETP bycatch and overfishing, improved data collection and management, hatcheries, and domestic market partnerships. Research and activities have included Socio Economic Baseline Assessments and a domestic markets analysis, data mapping workshops, a hatcheries viability assessment, and, most recently, the launch of a citizen science program in partnership with local universities and fishing communities.
Tunisian Blue Swimming Crab: In collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), we are undertaking a joint project to better understand the barriers and opportunities forTunisian BSC fishers to secure access to social security and assistance, access local and international markets, and sustainably and equitably manage a new species that has quickly become dominant along the coast. Our work directly supports FAO’s implementation of two of their Blue Transformation core objectives, i.e. effective management of the blue crab fishery to deliver healthy stocks and secure livelihoods as part of a value chain that ensures social, economic and environmental viability of the BSC food system. This collaboration will also actively foster public-private partnerships both nationally and internationally, bringing together small-scale fishers and their organizations, government, the seafood industry and academia.
SSRT: The Seafood Social Risk Tool assesses the risks of forced labor, human trafficking, and hazardous child labor associated with a seafood product and producing country. The assessment includes more than 80 indicators of risk based on publicly available evidence of forced labor, human trafficking, and hazardous child labor abuses in seafood supply chains; as well as an analysis of information about risk factors correlated with these abuses such as working hours, minimum age for employment, and how a seafood product is transported. These publicly-available profiles help businesses and stakeholders better understand the risks of human rights abuses in seafood supply chains, enabling them to focus their due diligence efforts on improving conditions for seafood workers.
Informality in Small-Scale Fisheries: The informal systems used by small-scale fishers participating in Peru’s mahi-mahi and jumbo squid fisheries have long been a critical barrier to improved ratings as well as eventual certification; a situation common to SSF worldwide. To better understand the causes and consequences of informality, one of our Global Fellows will be focusing her PhD research on the informal relationships and processes that are inherent to these SSF communities. Key research questions include: is formality necessarily negative? What causes the continuation of informal systems despite pressure and support from government and industry to formalize? And how can we more effectively collaborate with and incentivize these informal actors?
