Build a Solar Ferry and provide general support for an Island School at Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda

    Lake Bunyonyi Secondary School within Lake Bunyonyi faces two main issues:
    1) School infrastructure (degrading buildings, missing learning material, no/slow internet access, energy)
    2) Transportation: Many children missing classes due to not enough boats, existing boats (dugouts) are very slow or the transfer is expensive (motor boats)
    Objectives:
    Shortterm: Support school infrastructure (renovation, internet, sustainable energy)
    Midterm: Build a solar ferry that solves the transportation problems and setup the curricula in the school to foster education on solar energy usage and promote its usage in the community
    Longterm: Setup a small production of solar ferries along with a vocation school
    Capacity

    Uganda - with its geographical proximity to the equator - is ideally situated to support massive solar energy implementation. With this project, we start small by preparing a limited community around Lake Bunyonyi to "own", understand, and run a solar ferry. In preparation for that, the school will teach solar energy within its curricula, leveraging solar education kits. We have already sent 50 solar chargers that helped dramatically to <br />
    and then will demonstrate on a larger scale what can be done with solar energy (run a solar ferry). <br />

    Governed

    The Islandschool Uganda Association is in charge of coordinating the activities and create donations. It is closely working with international technology companies (e.g. Hewlett Parckard) to maximize funds and help with resources and knowledge transfer.<br />
    <br />
    The University Emden/Leer has been running a solar boat team for many years. Students from that team are responsible to design the solar ferry and others develop curricula that will help with the knowledge transfer and help to educate the teacher, students and the community. So far the association has sent 4 students (2 twice) to Uganda to "study" locally.<br />
    <br />
    The Lake Bunyonyi Community and Island Association has been established locally under the leadership of the principal of the school to coordinate the efforts, receive funding and spend it according to the agreed plans. It is mainly working to improve the education situation for the children around the Lake Bunyonyi, but also serves and interacts with the overall community.
