Description
Akalroop works with independent handloom weavers who were struggling to earn a livelihood ever since fast fashion came in, as the demand for their products declined. Due to their limited resources and education they were not able to integrate into the market to generate business for themselves. We are strictly focused on weaving pure and natural yarns and utilizing natural color fabrics and apparel accessories. Our silks are certified by the Silk Mark of India which is the world’s largest silk certifying authority, and have unique textures and luxurious feel to them.
The weavers are educated to work in such a way that there is little impact on the environment and resources. We follow a zero waste philosophy, hence a lot of silks are blends of other silks as all left over yarns are used. Since cotton consumes a lot of water, we utilize cotton silk blends. We use Sericulture, as it does not have negative impact on soil and encourages the planting of trees to feed silk moths - our main aim is to take silk fabric to the world which is good for casual to formal wear and is not very pocket heavy. It is Akalroops dream to take the talent of Indian weavers outside India and present fabrics which are truly worthy of praise and promote sustainable fashion.
Most of the time, we work on a made-to-order basis. The focus is on producing and selling what is crafted, rather than continuously weaving and creating dead stock. Weavers are supported and guided in purchasing pure and natural yarns. The use of synthetic yarns and blends has been drastically reduced after educating them about the environmental damage caused and the issues with cheap clothing ending up in landfills and oceans.
The Silk Mark quality criteria have been explained to the weavers to ensure they can weave accordingly. Additionally, support offices for weavers are established in major weaving locations, where weavers can seek guidance and assistance whenever needed.
Silk Mark of India organises trainings for weavers to help them understand about new developments in quality measurements, silk rearing process, sericulture process, new locations for yarn sourcing, cocoon availability etc. During these sessions weavers also get a chance to talk about standardization of yarn prices so that they pay right price for the yarns.
Through communication with clients, consumers and Silk Mark of India, information about market trends, designs, natural dyeing is gained and shared with the weavers and how important it is to continue to weave natural fabrics with no interface with chemicals to prevent environment pollution. A special focus is put on zero waste weaving where all left over yarns are used to weave fabrics. We have come to the conclusion that upcyceling old fabric is more important to us, rather than constantly using new materials and creating deadstock.
Our consumers and clients are educated about the importance of handloom weaving and its impact on uplifting economically marginalized weavers. We teach that the quality of fabrics plays a vital role in shaping the fashion landscape. Silk Mark of India keeps promoting important information about India sericulture and silk weaving industry.
The initiative is currently governed by visits to the weavers site and quality checks on the weaving process with respect to design and usage of yarns provided by Silk Mark of India. Besides this we ensure that the weavers place of work is safe and hygienic. Furthermore, so called weavers help-group offices are located in all major weaver cluster locations, which are run by the government to assure that the weavers receive the assistance they need with setting up the loom or sourcing the right kind of yarns.
These offices help to regulate certain disciplines so that there is peace and harmony among the weavers. A lot of our work can be further improved with the development with pure silks, currently we oft use a blend of multiple silks to weave fabrics, due to its lower cost. This technique is often used, as the weavers are worried about selling.
Since the weaving process is all handmade we deal mostly with natural colors for fabric and yarn, which are all certified by SMOI. Audits are done by SMOI to ensure purity is sustained in the weaving process. The weavers are also trained to perform the quality checks, which are usually done at the beginning of the weaving process when the yarns are received.
