Accelerating the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Center for Comprehensive Homeless Services

(
Non-governmental organization (NGO)
)
#SDGAction43584
    Description
    Description
    To mitigate the effects and prevalence of homelessness for the most vulnerable individuals through the provision of free, localized, high-quality resources, support, and residence using a human-rights based approach. Multiple services - housing, healthcare, professional development workshops - will be offered at a holistic center to enable the gradual long-term development of a productive, healthy lifestyle for the vulnerable homeless population. Potential residents can sign up or be referred by healthcare professionals from hospitals, clinics, mobile clinics, and other sites of care. Free food, clothes, medical care, and housing will be provided for 3 weeks. These individuals will be given the option to develop a program of care and become permanent residents. Individualized sessions with mental health professionals will assess challenges and their hopes out of the program. The facility will then integrate its many resources into creating a long term health plan. The focus of the facility will be patient-driven care. Permanent residents will have weekly meetings to check on their progress and adjust their programs as needed. To enable independence, professional training will provide the residents with the skills to work in the community garden, construction workshops, and other professional settings to earn an income. Regular health checkups will also be provided to ensure the maximum mental and physical health of the resident. Upon program completion, with agreement from counselors and healthcare professionals, permanent residents will be given housing outside the center but will still have access to all resources. In addition to returning for regular checkups, they may continue working at the center nor a job will be provided to them with outside partnerships. To assess the efficiency and success of our program, long-term data collection will be performed to follow-up on participants and evaluate whether the acquired lifestyle was maintained upon completion of the program. Feedback, in the form of surveys, from residents and personnel will be encouraged. Finally, managerial reports will be expected on a regular basis for continued observation and assessment of the center and its maintenance. An advisory board will be implemented to oversee the daily functions of the facility, ensuring that proper maintenance and care are provided. Community participation will be encouraged through the use of volunteer assistance within facility clinics and workshops. Funding is secured by means of various partnerships, grants, and donations to assure a high-quality institution. Facilities will be heavily implemented in the Sustainable Development Goals to guarantee acceleration by 2030. In light of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the facility will be an additional step in limiting the spread of the virus, particularly among the homeless population by providing housing, mental and physical health services, and career development.
    Expected Impact

    Addressing the major global issue of homelessness tackles the following SDGs:
    No Poverty (1) Zero Hunger (2), Good Health and Well-Being (3), Decent Work and Economic Growth (8) Industry Innovation and Infrastructure (9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11), and Partnerships (17)
    Through time, individuals can develop skills to have sustainable lives where they can contribute to the community and be a part of the employed population. Emphasis on creating new and strengthening current partnerships accelerates SDG implementation by enabling the center to provide high-quality holistic services to the most vulnerable homeless population, including families, substance-abusers, and mentally-ill individuals. The provision of these services will enable these individuals to adopt sustainable, healthy lifestyles in which self-care, independence, and overall good well-being are meaningful components of their lives. In the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in homelessness, mental health issues, and unemployment. Building back better, the facility will combat the spread of the virus and the consequences of the pandemic - which include the increased need for employment, housing, and mental and physical health services - through the provision of high-quality, holistic, and individualized services. As such, the negative impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on the homeless population will be mitigated and eventually replaced by sustainable services and solutions.
