Background
The stakeholder consultation workshop is chaired by the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce (MOIC), who has directly led the formulation of the National MSME Development Plan 2021-2025 from the government side. Participants in the workshop include policymakers from different Ministries, members of the Prime Minister’s Office, representatives from the private sector and research community. Participants recognized the added value of the National MSME Development Plan 2021-2025 and shared their views on enhancing MSME contributions to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Lao PDR. The National MSME Development Plan 2021-2025 comprises the overarching national strategy supporting the growth of MSMEs in the Lao PDR in the next five years. Inclusive consultations were conducted during the formulation of the plan. Policymakers, MSME entrepreneurs and researchers are widely consulted on their views regarding priorities, challenges and opportunities relating to MSME growth in the Lao PDR . On the consultation workshop, participants recognized the added value of the inclusive consultation process that has led to the inclusion of relevant areas and priorities for MSME growth in the National MSME Development Plan. As the next step, the MOIC has agreed to share the National MSME Development Plan 2021-2025, in both English and Lao versions, with additional stakeholders, including the UN Country Team. Moreover, focusing areas included in the National MSME Development Plan also suggest focuses of continued collaboration between DESA and the MOIC in the implementation of the new MSME project of DESA in the Lao PDR. Follow up support will be provided by the new MSME project in alignment with focusing areas outlined the National MSME Development Plan 2021-2025.
