National Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on the Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (MSME) Monitoring Framework in Zimbabwe
Mon 06 Jun 2022, 9.00 am — Tue 07 Jun 2022, 5.00 pmBackground
The Government of Zimbabwe has prioritized the MSME sector as evidenced by the enactment of the Small and Medium Enterprises Act (Chapter 24:12) in 2002. Recognizing the potential contribution of the MSME sector to the attainment of Vision 2030 of achieving an upper middle-income economy as underscored by the National Development Strategy (NDS1) as well as the SADC Industrial Development Policy Framework, the Government has prioritized developing a results-oriented Monitoring Framework for timely tracking MSMEs contribution to Vision 2030, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and AU Agenda 2063. Support for MSME’s has been prioritized in the National Development Strategy 1 and has been strengthened by the review of the National MSME Policy 2020-2024 and the MSME Recovery Plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, supporting MSME is also highlighted as an economic transformation priority area under the Zimbabwe United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2022-2026). It is envisaged that interventions under the UNSDCF strategic priority on economic transformation, equitable and inclusive growth will align with the ‘Prosperity’ pillar of the 2030 Agenda and AU Agenda 2063 while strengthening the NDS1 aspirations for economic growth and stability and increasing resilience to macro-economic shocks and stresses.
Division for Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DSDG/DESA), the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and SME Development (MWACSMED) and the Resident Coordinator/UN Country Team are working together to provide demand-driven support to strengthen national capacities and enhance MSME resilience for rebuilding better and stronger to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Zimbabwe. Providing capacity building support to the MWACSMED on formulating the MSME Monitoring Framework is the first focus under the cooperative framework between DSDG/DESA and MWACSMDED as well as UN-DESA capacity building activities outlined in the UNSDCF 2022-2026. The monitoring framework aims to provide regular information to strengthen evidence-based policymaking process that supports MSMEs enhancing their resilience in the course of inclusive and sustainable recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The national stakeholder consultation workshop aims to to review and validate the draft Zimbabwe MSME Monitoring Framework with relevant stakeholders and to strengthen its relevance and contribution to the results monitoring framework of the NDS 1 and the Zimbabwe-United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2022-2026. .
