Background
This event was jointly organised by the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States Secretariat (OACPS) and the UN Inter-agency Task Team (UN-IATT) on Capacity Building on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is co-coordinated by UNESCO and UNCTAD. The event was composed of two parts:
Part 1: Knowledge Exchange on Research and Innovation (R&I) Strategies, with discussion and sharing of experiences between countries in Africa on STI policies and strategies development and implementation.
Part 2: Capacity Building on STI Policy and Policy Instruments for SDGs
- Session 1: Current approaches to STI policy making in the context of SDGs, with focus on open science and gender equality
- Session 2: STI policy instruments design
- Session 3: STI policy instruments implementation
- Session 4: Innovation and entrepreneurship
- Session 5: Technology transfer needs assessment
- Session 6: STI policy monitoring and evaluation

As the second part of the Mutual Learning Exercise, the Capacity-building Workshop on STI Policy and Policy Instruments for SDGs was attended by 35 STI officials (14 women) from 17 countries ( Cameroon, Ethiopia, Fiji, Guinea, Haiti, Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Gambia, Timor-Leste, Togo, Zambia)
