    GGGI and our partners are working to reduce ALDFG in the environment through prevention, mitigation and remediation. Our work began in 2018 with small, remote artisanal fishing communities who work with AFADs. Reduction of environmental harm though ALDFG will be achieved through the testing of pelagic data systems, fisher surveys, community buyback projects, hotspot mapping of ALDFG, and AFAD location monitoring and retrieval protocols. This project is currently continuing with great momentum.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

    GGGI partners with local and remote agencies that have capacity beyond the reach of GGGI staff to affect positive change for fishing communities and the marine environment. By partnering with local agencies, such as VESS and VFD, we can achieve the oversight that we need in order to communicate with and serve the needs of the local communities of Vanuatu. These agencies also have local knowledge of the environment that can assist with our understanding of ALDFG drift and hot spot mapping. Groundtruthing divers are always hired locally due to the need for experience and knowledge of the local environment. We work with local individuals and businesses wherever possible to benefit the local economy and build local capacity on the ground to continue future work. The introduction of BOG and CLS trackable gear is important, but it must be compatible with local fisher activities, and Vanuatu fisher input is crucial to the success of our project. We partner also with NRC, as they have the expertise to create hotspot mapping from data collected from the local area, as well as data collected from local fishers who understand the weather and geography of their fishing territory.

    Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

    GGGI’s goal in Vanuatu is to create a circular economy for fishing gear. GGGI has begun a buyback program that coordinates with partner organizations to recycle reuse or dispose of gear safely. To that end, GGGI partnered with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to produce a workshop on Best Practices to Prevent and Reduce ALDFG in Port Vila, Vanuatu on May 27-30, 2019. The objectives of the workshop were to: • Connect and build relationships with people working to address AKDFG in the Pacific region. • Enhance dialogue, and bilateral, sub-regional and/or regional cooperation and coordination between participating countries and stakeholders to address AKDFG, highlighting case studies of best practice being carried out by countries in the region. • Share regional perspectives and insights about challenges and solutions to preventi8ngnegaive impacts from ALDFG. • Raise awareness and understanding of the Voluntary Guidelines for the Marking of Fishing Gear (VGMFG) and associated best practice measures as outlines in GGGI’s Best Practice Framework for the Management of Fishing Gears (BPF). • Identify key challenges and capacity development needs at the regional level associated with addressing ALDFG and implementing tools such as the VGMFG and the GGGI BPF. • Identify regionally appropriate strategies to further develop, refine, and promote their implementation. • Inform subsequent steps taken by FAO to support countries in the region to implement instruments, measures, and tools to prevent and reduce ALDFG. To achieve these objectives, the four-day workshop featured presentations from global and regional experts and interactive working group sessions. The result of this workshops was the identification of stakeholder groups, including fisheries managers and control agencies, seafood companies and NGOs, which reflected the attendees of the workshop, who could implement and coordinate a fishing gear marking system consistent with the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Marking Fishing Gear. They also ensured an effective system was in place to report lost or abandoned fishing gear and required the use of biodegradable materials on fishing gears to minimize ghost fishing. They identified opportunities for increased engagement with the Marine Stewardship Council to implement best practices. They also discussed the strong need for disposal options for end-of-life or damaged gear to encourage and facilitate the retrieval of lost fishing gear.
