    Description
    Description
    West Pokot County is one of the 14 Counties in the Rift Valley region. It is situated in the North Rift along Kenya’s Western boundary with republic of Uganda border. It borders Turkana County to the North and North East, Trans Nzoia County to the South, Elgeyo Marakwet County and Baringo County to the South East and East respectively.
    The County has conflicts along her borders, caused by proliferation of small arms, retrogressive cultural practices including cattle rustling, female genital mutilation, and early marriages. The insecurity along the border has negatively affected education access, completion, and transition to higher levels of learning. The conflicts have led to the loss of many human lives with women and children become most vulnerable and affected by the conflict.
    The County Government of West Pokot for the last 3 years since 2017 has supported peace campaign initiatives that has seen reduced insecurity in the conflict areas and communities embracing peace and coexistence, the County established peace schools as part of peace dividend and as a tool to promote sustainable peaceful coexistence among communities living along its border boundaries.
    GENERAL OBJECTIVES
    The goal of this programme is to promote peaceful coexistence among cross border communities through providing access to education and sustainable livelihood.
    SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
    a) Support establishment and constructions of peace border schools.
    b) To strengthen sustained peace building and public awareness campaign across the region.
    c) Support community programs that promote gender equality, inclusivity and community empowerment.
    BENEFICIARIES
    The target beneficiaries are Pokots, Elgeyo Marakwet and Turkana of Kenya and cross border communities with republic of Uganda (Sebei and Karamojong) and communities living along the border of Trans Nzoia County and West Pokot County.
    IMPLEMENTATION
    This programme will be implemented in collaboration with partners to ensure peace border schools promote lasting peace in the region. The project management committees will play key role in implementation of the projects. They will employ various approaches and ensure wide range partnerships with the local community, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Interior and Coordination, media, and local leadership to ensure project results is achieved.
    SUSTAINABILITY
    The local leaders from the community were involved in the process of project inception, identification, provision of land and are included in project management committee of the projects. The committee will be supported in formation and capacity building to undertake their roles effectively. During the on-going construction the local community are participating in provision of local labour and materials (stones, sand).After completion of the project it will be handed over to the National government Ministry of education, science and Technology. The needy students will be supported with bursary to ensure retention in the schools. There will be integration of Peace building activities and climate change adaptation measures
    MONITORING
    The County department of education together with Project management committee will coordinate tracking and implementation of the programme through Quarterly meetings and reports, periodic field visits, and financial expenditure reports and annual progress reports to be shared with stakeholders.
    Expected Impact

    The peace schools are expected to yield sustainable peace within the region which will result to increased settlement, increased business activities within the area, increased school enrolment of both girls and boys, increased shared cross-border projects, joint leaders and peace meetings collaborations.     1. LINKAGES WITH SDG AND OTHER PLANS
    3.1 Linkage to SDG The construction of peace border schools intervention project aims to address SDG goal 1, 4 ,5 and 16 by promoting peace through education and integrating gender equality, peacebuilding into economic development. Education is important contributor to peace, the peace border schools school will provide for social interactions of children to learn together, learn each other, embrace and accept one another thus promoting peaceful coexistence in diversity. Enrolment of both boys and girls to the schools will promote gender equality which is key to the realization of human rights for all. The economy is the interaction of people, activities and institutions which will not exist without peace. The peace will translate into settle lifestyle within the communities leading to increased livelihood diversification activities.

    Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
    Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
    Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
    3.2 Linkage to implementation of Kenya Vision 2030 and Medium Term Plan III (2018-2022)
    Under Social Pillar. The pillar aims at building a just and cohesive society that enjoys equitable social development in a clean and secure environment. During the plan period 2018-2022, the following projects and programs have been planned for implementation; Increase the coverage of ECDE in the country by 20% and Enhance access to basic education in ASAL’s communities
    3.3 Linkage to County Integrated Development Plan CIDP (2018-2022)
    The Plan under education sector outlined to increase access, retention and completion levels in pre-primary education, primary, secondary and post-secondary education by at least 100 percent by 2022; through various interventions which include support infrastructure development in schools at all levels, Provision of bursaries to needy students, promote adult education, establishment of low-cost boarding primary schools and enhance campaigns against adolescent births, early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation
