    Description
    Intro

The MOB.Poiares Project has as main focus the smooth and clickable mobility and the use of the bicycle, it aims to promote the use of clean energy, awaken children and young people to a greater sensitivity and awareness of the environment and inspire them to build a greener future. This project contributes significantly to a change in the way of locomotion and in the way of looking at the environment, starting with the youngest, it will have a great impact at the environmental level, namely in the decarbonization of society. The main beneficiaries are children aged 3 to 12, including children with special educational needs.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

The project involves the implementation of actions aimed at pre-school children and the 1st and 2nd cycle of basic education. The pedagogical approach was based on collaborative methodologies with an emphasis on experimentation and the promotion of learning through interaction, example, learning through play. Based on the theme of cycling mobility and based on some points of orientation and good practices related to the environment, recycling and the reuse of waste, children are encouraged to build their city of the future. In pre-school, groups are created according tothose who know how to use the bicycle, those who know little and those who do not know how to rideand based on 'make-believe'. They also make role play byvarious characters and assume different roles and functions: the traffic policeman; the owner of the bicycle electric charging station, the person in charge of the ecopoint and recycling center, etc. The city is built from the use of cardboard boxes, transforming them into buildings or a service station. In the action aimed at the 1st and 2nd cycles, groups are also created according with who know how to use the bicycle, those who know little and those who do not know how to ride a bicycle. They also make role play of various characters and assume different roles on the road: o pedestrian and cyclist. The created scenario contemplates the public road from roads, crosswalks, roundabouts, in order to play their roles in the city, playing. The city is painted on the ground in order to create several streets and ways of circulation Throughout the dynamic sessions, all students are evaluated and their data saved for final report. The objectives include a scale with its degree of evolution in view of the challenges that are proposed to them and / or the variations of their school results.

    Results/Outputs/Impacts

The results achieved in the short term were the availability of materials and equipment, the development of activities related to soft mobility, increased sensitivity and skills in cycling mobility. The project also allows the elements of the school community (students, educators, teachers and staff) to be more aware of the added value of soft mobility for safety in spaces and mobility (less cars), for health (increase physical activity), for the territory (reduction of floor degradation) and for the environment (reduction of CO2 emissions). In the medium and long term, it is intended that schools continue to promote the use of bicycles and to deconstruct myths about their use (insecurity), to increase the number of people who resort to smooth mobility when traveling home-school or home-work, reduce the levels of CO2 in the territory and decrease the flow of traffic in the main road arteries of the Municipality.

    Enabling factors and constraints

The implementation of the project had the financial support of the Environmental Fund program, from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action of the Portuguese Republic, which allowed the purchase of bicycles and play equipment, delivered to the 4 schools involved. The partnership with the School Group made it possible to overcome the constraint between the implementation of the initiative and the fulfillment of the curricular plan that has to be developed by the school. This situation was overcome by promoting actions in the period allocated to extracurricular activities of physical and motor expression and occupational activity.

    Sustainability and replicability

The actions were structured in two stages, the first corresponding to the implementation of the program in schools that express interest in collaborating. The second stage presupposes the expansion to institutions and to the 3rd and Secondary education levels, covering the entire geographical area of the Municipality. The expectation is that similar experiences can be replicated in other schools and territories, with positive impacts both on the institutions and on the people involved. The role of the municipality, in the context of other projects related to cycling mobility, will serve to support its sustainability, contributing to the replication of actions on other levels, the use of equipment in other actions and events, the responsibility for maintenance and training in this area, contributing for the sustainability of this project, as well as for the education and training of children and for sustainable local / regional development in the environmental learning process.

    Other sources of information
    COVID-19 Impact

The Covid-19 pandemic had an impact on the implementation of this project, given that schools closed from March to June March 2020 and closed again at the end of January 2021, with no classroom classes taking place, which prevented the implementation of the project during interruption periods. However, the promotion of bicycle use contributed to riding bicycling instead of using public transports or own cars and to practice physical activity.
