Description
The UN has declared the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), encouraging and supporting many initiatives to help in identifying the knowledge for sustainable development, generating this knowledge and understanding of the ocean, or increasing the use of ocean knowledge. Traditional ecological knowledge has been developed over thousands of years and there indigenous people at coastal communities have lived in balance and harmony with their social, cultural, natural, and spiritual world. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO has endorsed our project titled 'Indigenous People, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and Climate Change: The Iconic Underwater Cultural Heritage of Stone Tidal Weirs' as an action project forming part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science. In this project, the head organization is Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (Akifumi Iwabuchi) in Japan. Our focus is the traditional ecological knowledge that has been accumulated by indigenous people when using traditional fish traps, primarily the stone tidal weirs, and how this knowledge and the fishing practices could be used to assist in the sustainability and conservation of the marine ecology. It treats the living heritage (intangible cultural heritage) and the tangible cultural heritage of stone tidal weirs on the earth, providing cross-cultural comparisons and a world-view on the significance of this research and results. The project engages with local coastal communities in several countries where stone tidal weirs and traditional ecological knowledge investigations have been implemented. This is an important area of research: the health of the ocean, the marine ecology, fish stocks, and human health are threatened by climate change, in particular, global ocean climate crisis. The direct output of our project is the acquisition of traditional cultural practices, traditional ecological knowledge, and partnerships and active engagement with a number of coastal communities. By studying the underwater cultural heritage of stone tidal weirs and by developing local community projects our project strikes a balance between natural science and social science to better understand and maintain the ocean ecology. The stone tidal weir would be a symbol of the integration of traditional ecological knowledge and 21st century natural science and provide a way forward for sustainability. Many coastal communities rely more on traditional foods, such as fish. While traditional fishing may be involved, such as using stone tidal weirs, it is likely non-traditional techniques could be used that could harm the necessary balance and harmony of these fragile ecosystems. This stone tidal weir project that has a broad ecological, multidisciplinary, traditional ecological knowledge, 21st century natural science approach together with community engagement and project development, is an excellent opportunity for developing sustainability of our oceans. Local communities, which face climate crisis, are now missing out particularly in fish that supply micro-nutrient and fatty-acid deficiencies. Without these micro-nutrients, child mortality will increase, especially in developing nations. It is possible that stone tidal weirs and their associated traditional ecological knowledge and associated practices could play an important role in responding to these issues.
