    DonateNYC, a program of NYC’s Department of Sanitation, helps residents, businesses, nonprofits, and city agencies engage in reuse through online tools, a non-profit partnership, and public engagement. DoanteNYC’s flagship public engagement opportunity is the yearly ReFashion Week. Launched in 2019, ReFashion Week is a series of events designed to reduce NYC’s textile waste and reimagine the fashion industry. The week culminates in a fully upcycled and thrifted ReFashion Show.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

    ReFashion week is executed between DonateNYC and the Sanitation Foundation, with additional support from outside contractors, event sponsors, and the broader community tackling textile waste.

    Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

    DonateNYC develops programming with the aim of increasing engagement around the issue of textile waste. For the 5th anniversary we are developing an educational programming and focused on improving data collection.

    Coordination mechanisms

    ReFashion Week is a program of DSNY’s and co-produced by the Sanitation Foundation, the nonprofit arm of DSNY.

    Evaluation

    ReFashion Week is evaluated yearly by the co-producers and then again as part of DSNY’s internal budgeting and work plan process. Data collected includes: Number of events, number of participants, number of attendees, material diversion, and the environmental impact of diversion.
