Description
Description

Textile Exchange’s 2030 strategy, Climate+ (pronounced “Climate Plus”), was announced during the 2019 Textile Sustainability Conference. Under the Climate+ strategic direction, Textile Exchange will be the driving force for urgent climate action with a goal of a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions from textile fiber and material production by 2030. For years, Textile Exchange has promoted practices, standards, and resources that benefit the climate. Adopting the Climate+ strategy makes climate a deliberate priority and organizational focus for an impact area that requires immediate attention and for which we have many existing tools and resources. The “+” in Climate+ ensures that Textile Exchange prioritizes climate while also continuing to address other interdependent impact areas such as water, biodiversity and soil health. The “+” is also an acknowledgment of the importance of partnerships, as Textile Exchange cannot achieve the 2030 goal on its own.

Implementation of the Project/Activity

Textile Exchange’s Climate+ strategy is embedded across all of the organization’s platforms and offerings: Textile Exchange standards are evolving to ensure clear linkages between practices and beneficial environmental and social outcomes. Round Tables drive action in specific fiber and materials categories, such as cotton, synthetics, animal fibers, and man-made cellulosics. Research, including the Preferred Fiber and Materials Market Report and the Regenerative Agriculture Landscape Analysis, provides unique information critical to accelerating the uptake of more sustainable raw materials. The Corporate Fiber and Materials Benchmark is the go-to reporting framework for corporate reporting on sustainable materials progress. Tools such as the Preferred Fiber and Materials Matrix and the Global Fiber Impact Explorer offer guidance to understand the risks and trade-offs associated with different materials options and make informed strategy and sourcing decisions. Textile Exchange events, including its annual conference and regular webinars, convene the industry to advance knowledge and collaborate toward solutions. It is also important to note that achieving Textile Exchange’s Climate+ goal will require partnerships within and beyond the fashion and textile sector to accelerate the adoption of existing tools as well as to enable disruptive innovation and systems change.

Coordination mechanisms

Textile Exchange’s Climate+ strategy is embedded across all its programs and platforms, including the fiber and materials Round Tables, standards, and reporting. A Climate+ strategy team was formed in 2021 to lead the implementation of the strategy across the organization and industry, as well as support the industry’s needs in cross-cutting issues including impact data and Life Cycle Assessments, innovative topics such as regenerative agriculture, and policy initiatives. Textile Exchange overall is directed by a Governance Board of industry leaders from across the value chain.

Partners

With a robust membership of over 700 brands, retailers, and suppliers, Textile Exchange is positively impacting climate through accelerating the use of preferred fibers across the global textile industry. Textile Exchange’s 2030 Strategy, “Climate+,” is the result of extensive stakeholder engagement through interviews and an online survey conducted with a mix of Textile Exchange members and non-members across the globe.
