Description
The Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance is a regional coalition and grassroots movement working together to transform policy and practice and catalyse action for climate justice. In the face of the climate emergency, biodiversity loss and growing social inequality, it brings together leading civil society organisations, grassroots activists, academics, creatives, media and their networks working across different sectors and aspects of climate justice to spark greater awareness, engagement and collaboration for concrete change. It also aims to better hold governments and the private sector accountable for climate and development commitments, including under the Paris Agreement, 2030 Agenda and SDGs.
The Alliance has jointly developed the Caribbean Climate Justice and Resilience Agenda 2023-2030. It offers a shared vision from civil society on what are the priority needs and actions for addressing the climate crisis, including for the most vulnerable and marginalised groups, and supports collective advocacy and action for climate justice and building local resilience. It highlights 8 priority areas for action: 1. Curbing emissions to limit global temperature increase to 1.5˚C above pre-industrial levels 2. Scaling up locally-led solutions for adapting to and addressing loss and damage from climate impacts 3. Improving access to funding for frontline communities, small and micro enterprises and civil society organisations to support a 'whole of society' approach 4. Scaling up nature-based solutions for adaptation, mitigation and resilience 5. Supporting a just transition for pro-poor, inclusive, sustainable, and resilient development 6. Promoting gender equitable and socially inclusive approaches to climate action 7. Promoting youth and intergenerational equity as core to the climate response 8. Ensuring a right-based and earth-centred approach across all these priority areas to enable climate justice The Alliance's thematic working groups are responsible for actioning these different priority areas, including developing advocacy campaigns, mobilising knowledge and resources and coordinating concrete actions. A pledging platform has been launched as of May 2024 to enable the Alliance members, as well as public and private sector entities and other development partners, to track progress in achieving the 8 priority areas of the Agenda and spotlight innovative climate justice actions in the region: https://resiliencecanari.org/pledge/
A Climate Action Small Grant Facility, with an initial window of US$150,000, has been established to fund joint advocacy and practical actions by the Alliance up to 2025, in line with the Caribbean Climate Justice and Resilience Agenda. The online, open access Caribbean Resilience Knowledge Platform has also been created to support knowledge sharing, networking and collaboration among the Alliance members and partners from the public and private sector that support its work: https://resiliencecanari.org/ Additionally, climate and environmental advocacy training has been provided to the Alliance members and other interested civil society organisations and individual activists in 2022 and 2024, and a series of online and in-person information webinars and dialogues have been held to support knowledge sharing and partnership building among the allies on various aspects of climate justice.
As of June 2024, over 50 allies from 14 Caribbean countries form the Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance. The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) serves as the secretariat and convenor of the Alliance and provides technical support for its operation. Thematic working groups are jointly convened by allies with relevant expertise and coordinate the work of the Alliance. Current themes of the working groups include: • Access to finance • Adaptation and loss and damage • Gender equity • Human rights • Just nature-based solutions • Just transition • Youth and intergenerational equity
